“For those who are suffering with various issues, the holidays can be a real, real tough time, and it is an opportunity right now for us to get close to our families, to talk about the things that we need to talk about (and) to be grateful for the things that we have in our lives,” said Sharits.
Sharits urges those who are going through a rough time over the holidays to find someone they can talk to and lean on for support.

One resource for those in need of extra support is Grace Baptist Church, who opens its doors for anyone in the community looking for someone to talk to.
“During normal business hours we actually have chaplains on call that will take any phone call or walk in that just needs someone to talk with,” explained Broyles, the church’s pastor of marriage and care. “The hardest part is asking for help, and that is why we have chaplains there.”
The chaplains are there to speak with anyone who needs them regardless of whether or not they are members of the church. The church’s main goal is to help those in the community who may be suffering and are feeling lonely.
“What a great resource. We will hit highs and lows going through the week and think, ‘My gosh, I wish I had somebody here to talk to,’ and there is a resource… at Grace Baptist anytime that I could stop by or call and talk to somebody,” said Sharits.
As Wilson, Grace Baptist Church’s spiritual care coordinator, points out, the reasons the holidays can be tough on some people can vary.
“Sometimes holidays, you are missing a loved one, or you don’t get to be with family members that you want to be (with), or you do get to be with them and things don’t always go the way you hoped they would,” explained Wilson.
The program at Grace Baptist Church aims to help as many people in the community feel encouraged and supported, not just during the holiday season but throughout the year as well.
“What a relief,” said Sharits. “Where I can just go, ‘Man I need a little break, let me go over and attend some of the services or talk to somebody and just pray a little bit, hold somebody’s hand and get some of the support that I need.’”
