The pilot and passenger who were killed in a Newhall Pass plane crash Friday afternoon have been identified, officials said Monday.
John Russel Calvert, 77, of Valencia, and Kevin Solis, 36, of Fontana, were killed in a Newhall Pass plane crash near the Sunshine Canyon Landfill Friday afternoon, according to Sara Ardalani, spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.
The wreckage of the plane was found around 5:30 p.m. Friday on a hill near the landfill, according to Ian Gregor of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
An employee at Sunshine Canyon Landfill reported seeing an aircraft with engine problems, according to Fire officials.

“A single-engine Mooney M20 disappeared from radar while inbound to Van Nuys Airport around 1:50 p.m.,” Gregor said at the time, noting that the aircraft had departed from Southwest Oregon Regional Airport in North Bend, Oregon.
An aircraft matching that description was registered to Calvert, with a take-off time from South Bend clocked in at around 10:41 a.m. Friday, following a registered flight path to the Van Nuys Airport.
Air Traffic recordings indicate that the pilot may have lost awareness of the plane’s location due to weather.
The cause of the Newhall Pass plane crash remains under investigation.
