Valladares’ Assembly Bill On Power Outages Passes Through House, Senate

Assembly Bill 418, introduced by Assemblywoman Suzette Valladares (R-Santa Clarita), unanimously passed through both houses of Legislature and is set to be considered by the governor.

The bill aims to work to provide local governments and communities with resources needed to ensure critical services are available during power outages. During a blackout local governments work to adequately prepare and supply for emergencies and require more energy to support fire and police departments, food banks, and cooling centers.

“I introduced Assembly Bill 418 this year to address much of the feedback we received about these PSPS events and make sure your voices are heard,” said Valladares in a statement.

The bill comes as a response to public concerns regarding extensive power outages and Public Safety Power Shutoff events.

During these events many vulnerable communities are endangered due to lack of electricity, including those who rely on medical devices, medication that must be kept cool, and workers and students who rely on computers for school or work. Money lost due to food spoiling is also a concern for many families.

AB 418 is set to be presented to the governor’s office and if signed, could help communities prepare for power outages.I encourage everyone impacted by these public safety power shut offs to please contact the Governor’s office today and ask him to support AB 418,” said Valladares.
