Santa Clarita Crime Report is a service provided by KHTS Radio and Santa Clarita Sheriffs as a part of Santa Clarita Neighborhoods.

KHTS Safety Tip: Be on the lookout for some classic cons. One such classic con is the “Bank Examiner Con.” In this con a person asks victims to help catch a dishonest bank teller. They tend to instruct victims to withdraw money from their accounts and then turn it over to the conperson so they can check the serial numbers on the bills. The conperson will then just take your money and you will never see it again. Another common con is “The Pigeon Drop.” In this case, a couple of strangers will inform you that they have found a large sum of money or valuables and they are willing to let you in on the find. The group will usually ask you to put up some “good faith” money. Once you give up your cash to the strangers they will disappear and you will never see your money or the strangers again. One extremely famous con is the “Pyramid Scheme.” This con operates by getting you to invest into a rising company with a guaranteed high return. You are then encouraged to recruit more investors, which that additional investment goes towards you and people above you. At some point, additional investment becomes impossible. Once this happens every individual in the investment pyramid loses their investments, except for the person at the very top.

Public Safety: It can take seconds for a thief to steal something from your car, so never leave valuables inside. Most vehicle crime is preventable. Don’t make your car a target for thieves by leaving sought-after items such as purses, wallets, laptop computers and cell phones in plain view. Always check you have closed all your windows and locked the doors before leaving your car unattended. While there’s no surefire way to totally prevent your car from being broken into, keeping these tips in mind can make your car less of a target.
