Ed. Note: The following is a KHTS Feature story based on a recent radio interview with Alex Urbina.
Whether you like it or not, you’re a role model for your kids– but what example are you putting out there? Santa Clarita life coach Alex Urbina talked about becoming the role model you want to be on the latest “My Conscious Dad” show on KHTS AM-1220.

“Your kids are watching you and deciding what they want to be as a future mom or dad by following the way you’re showing up in the world,” Urbina said. “So whether you’re doing it consciously or unconsciously, you’re still having an effect on your kids.”
As a parent, the choices you make and the results you create impact your kids more than the words you say to them or the advice that you give them, according to Urbina.
The last thing a parent wants is to sit down with their teenager to talk about a poor choice they made, only to have their teen respond, “Well you did it, didn’t you?” We all make mistakes sometimes, but making a conscious effort to be a positive role model for your kids can only benefit them– and you.

Before you get overwhelmed with possibilities, Urbina advises parents to start with something small and let your kids know why it’s a big deal for you.
“Let them watch you in that challenge and overcoming that,” he said. “You start with little things and then you work up to big things. … Don’t disempower yourself– just decide, ‘Today I’m going to start to live that kind of a life. Maybe I’m going to start to inspire myself.’”
For example, if you’ve found yourself avoiding the dance floor at weddings or other family events because you feel self conscious about dancing in public, make a conscious effort to gain confidence by taking a zumba class or signing up for lessons.
“To watch your mom and dad really challenge themselves and take on these projects that don’t seem possible and overcome, to watch them go through that journey– that’s inspiring,” Urbina said.
After awhile these small choices will start to add up and become even bigger ones, enabling you and your kids to experience a new form of freedom you may have never felt before.
“Emotional freedom– that frees you up to be able to figure out how to inspire other people,” Urbina said, “so that you can inspire them, one, with your words, and two, with your actions.”
