Alex Urbina noted that while most relationships start out fun and exciting, it’s common for long-term relationships to reach a point where they feel “dull” or “dragging” for one or both partners.
“Quite often I’ve heard some couples say, ‘We’re good friends, we love each other, but I’m not sure if (we’re) still in love with each other,’” Urbina said. “That to me is code for, ‘Hey, Alex, I need help because I feel like the connection is not there anymore.’”

Urbina encouraged someone who may be thinking along these lines not to assume that their partner isn’t right for them because the relationship isn’t extraordinary, and to stop depending on the other person to make it extraordinary.
““If you’re waiting for someone else to cause the experience that you really desire in a relationship, you might be waiting forever, until you decide that I can’t wait anymore. Now you’re going to go try to find it in someone else,” Urbina said.
Instead, Urbina encouraged individuals to take accountability for their own part in the relationship, and to make the effort to create the extraordinary relationship they want.
“You have to choose to say, ‘If it’s to be, it’s up to me,’” Urbina said. “‘I get to bring the joy in this relationship. I get to bring the fun in this relationship. I get to bring all the excitement that I’m looking for in that other person to bring. I have to bring it first.’”
Even better would be if both partners make the decision to bring this mindset into their relationship, Urbina continued.
“Imagine having a husband and wife both deciding that they’re going to take 100 percent accountability for the fun, the excitement and the joy and the happiness in the relationship,” he said. “Imagine both of you coming from that, 100 percent committed to bringing that.”
