A life coach in Santa Clarita is opening up a discussion about intimacy and relationships, which he compared to a “game for warriors.”

“I call it a game for warriors, because when it comes to relationships, you really have to be committed to working on yourself,” said Alex Urbina.

While many people wonder why the other person isn’t doing enough to meet their needs in the relationship, Urbina instead noted that in order for the relationship to be “extraordinary,” both partners need to be willing to look at themselves and ask what is missing on their end.

Urbina defined intimacy as “the closeness between people in a personal relationship” rather than merely the physical aspect of the relationship.

“Someone taught me that intimacy is like breaking it down into, ‘Into me you see,’” Urbina said. “It’s like letting somebody in to see inside of what’s really going on.”

An important aspect of intimacy is having the courage to talk openly and honestly with the other person without coming from a place of judgement or criticism, according to Urbina.

“Part of intimacy is opening up a dialogue of what a concern might be, or one of my fears is,” he said. “It’s okay to have those dialogues, but what most people do is, they shy away from having the courage to have those kinds of conversations.”

In addition, rather than being codependent and relying on the other person to meet their needs, Urbina noted that an extraordinary relationship is about meeting one’s own needs, but choosing to share the journey with the other person.

“It’s not, ‘I got together with you because I need something from you,’” he said. “I’ve just partnered up with you to share my day and my life with you.”
