Alex Urbina, a life coach in Santa Clarita, is describing three qualities that are often displayed by what he called “heartfelt” leaders.

1. Authentic
Instead of pretending to be perfect, Urbina emphasized the importance of being authentic and unafraid of showing your true self.
“(It’s) being able to reveal more deeply of one’s self, and courageously opening up and sharing with the intention to inspire those who might need it,” Urbina explained. “You have to be really revealing of yourself.”

Part of authenticity is being willing to be upfront and honest about your own mistakes, Urbina continued.
“You’ve got to be transparent and go, ‘Hey, I’ve made mistakes too,’” he said. “We all make mistakes and we’re all human.”
2. Secure
To Urbina, being secure in yourself means believing who you are and what you have is enough, and therefore you don’t need to compete with or tear down anyone else.
“You have to feel secure in who you are (so) that you feel no need to hurt anyone with your words or actions,” Urbina said. “You don’t have to play games. It frees you up to just really be fully in service and helping others, because there’s nothing you’re trying to get from anybody.”
3. Being Connected
Being able to connect with others enables them to feel safe in opening up to you more than they would ordinarily, according to Urbina.
“When you’re really connected to people, it’s this energy between you and them that really communicates, ‘I trust you,’” he explained. “Then all of a sudden, it’s a whole new level of communicating that to me is so beautiful. When I develop that kind of connection, I walk away feeling so grateful that we shared a little deeper than the common, ‘Hey, hello, how are you? I’m fine.’”
Part of this feeling of connection stems from the ability to be in the moment with the other person and listen to every word they’re saying without planning what you’re going to say back or trying to “fix” things for them, according to Urbina.
“You’re hanging onto every word that they’re saying from more of a compassionate place, more listening from seeking to understand where they are,” he said.
Instead of jumping into an immediate response when the person is done sharing, Urbina stressed the importance of taking the time to absorb what they’ve said and thank them for sharing before any response is made.
“It’s a little bit more delayed,” he said, “but it’s really enriched.”
