Life Coach In Santa Clarita: Seeing Fear As A Choice

Alex Urbina, a life coach in Santa Clarita, is talking about the possibility of mastering the fear in your life by seeing it as a choice instead of something that paralyzes you and holds you back.

Urbina first clarified that the type of fear he’s referring to is an “interpersonal” fear, rather than the kind that stems from facing physical danger.

“(Interpersonal) fear stops us from really taking on the challenges that are going to bring us the greatest rewards in life,” Urbina explained during the latest “The Alex Urbina Radio Show” on KHTS.

While many people may feel that their fear is a reaction they cannot control, Urbina asked that they instead be open to the possibility that fear is really a choice.

“It’s very hard to wrap our mind around the possibility that fear can be a choice,” he said. “The more that you become more conscious and aware that it can be a choice and that it is a choice, you actually start finding moments where you can choose to not have the fear.”

Urbina noted that fear only exists in the mind, and that it is a “byproduct” of the imagination, creating images of the worst-case scenario or what negative outcome might take place.

“If that’s the case and it’s something that happens in our mind, are we not conscious enough to be able to decide to either shut it down or come up with a different possibility in our mind that doesn’t cause fear to occur?” Urbina asked.

Urbina’s co-host on the show, Ellen Tunick, shared that a fear she struggles with every day is that if she says how she truly feels to certain people, it will cause chaos and anger and she might lose the relationship.

“It seems to always center around not being able to say what’s on my mind to certain people,” Tunick explained. “I can’t seem, at this point in time, … to break through it and be the spontaneous person that I would like to be where I feel free to say what I’m feeling.”

Urbina noted that breakthroughs often come when someone on “the outside looking in” gives their perspective on a situation that the person “inside” it would otherwise not be able to see for themselves.

“You can say whatever’s on your mind — it’s not like you can’t,” Urbina told Tunick. “You’re choosing not to because you create a scenario in your mind … of how people are going to react.”

Urbina asked Tunick to be open to the possibility that she is in “psychological resistance” to negative reactions “showing up” in her life, and that she hasn’t accepted that she cannot control the way others react.

“There’s a part of your ego that wants to be in control of the way people react to you,” he said. “As long as you live from that place, you cannot have the freedom to be who you decide to be in your life. You’re not going to experience the joy of just being free, free to be you.”

While Tunick may not be not free from her fear at this point, Urbina recognized the courage it took for her to share her experience, and that having these kinds of conversations are part of the process of deepening her awareness and understanding of the things she struggles with.

“The more you talk about it, the little further down the road you get, until one day, all of a sudden, … you’re not going to care what people think or how they respond,” Urbina concluded. “Because it finally clicked and you finally got it that, you know what, I can’t control how people respond, and if I can’t, then why do I stop myself from just being me?”
