Life Coach In Santa Clarita Talks With KHTS Owner About Overcoming Adversity During Coronavirus Quarantine

Alex Urbina, a life coach in Santa Clarita, recently opened up a discussion with KHTS Owner Jeri Seratti-Goldman about the way she overcame adversity during her two coronavirus quarantines.

Seratti-Goldman was first quarantined for 14 days onboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship after the coronavirus outbreak in Asia, and was then quarantined another 14 days upon her arrival back in the United States, testing negative for the virus the entire 28 days.

Urbina has coached Seratti-Goldman and her husband, Carl Goldman — who remains quarantined in Nebraska after testing positive for the novel coronavirus — for about 10 years.

The Santa Clarita life coach noted he has focused on teaching them to “surrender” what they cannot control in their lives, and instead be in the present moment, focusing on the things they can control and steps they can actively take in whatever situation they’re in.

“You have to learn how to not be in resistance to whatever challenge you’re faced with,” Urbina explained. “I think that’s the first step, is realizing whatever’s happening is happening for a reason, and I have no control over it, meaning I might be able to influence it or choose something to go around it or overcome it, but I can’t make it go away, specifically because it’s here now and I’ve got to learn how to deal with it.”

A few statements Urbina noted reflect being in resistance to a situation include: “I can’t believe this is happening to me;” “Why is this happening;” “This should not be the case;” “This sucks;” and “I can’t believe it.”

In contrast, statements that Urbina said reflect surrendering to the situation include: “It is what it is;” “Stuff happens;” “Now what do we do;” “Where do we go from here;” “I got this;” “Let’s get this over with;” and “Let’s get on down the path.”

After hearing these statements, Seratti-Goldman responded that the thoughts Urbina used as examples of being in resistance didn’t even occur to her or her husband when they were informed of their quarantines.

“I feel it’s because of the coaching that that never even occurred,” she said. “We went into, ‘Okay, we’ve got this appointment, that appointment, this has to be rescheduled, we have to do this with the house, the dogs… It was innate. There was no other resistance at all.”

Urbina pointed out that this would not have been the case when he first met the Goldmans, and that it was great to hear Seratti-Goldman say this type of solution-focused thinking is part of their wiring now.

“It was absolutely in our wiring of, ‘Okay, we’ve got this issue of 14 days,’ so we went into just handling one thing at a time, not to get overwhelmed and arranging our lives for the next 14 days,” Seratti-Goldman said.

When the Goldmans posted live videos on Facebook, Urbina noted it was inspiring to see their frame of mind, and that they were moving forward and “handling business,” with everything from managing the radio station remotely to changing their flights and more.

“It just seemed like you were more focused on handling the circumstance rather than being in resistance to the circumstance (or) being victimized by it, like, ‘Woe is me, I can’t believe this is happening,’ and then going into that psychological funk,” Urbina said. “It was almost like you just avoided the funk and stepped right into, ‘Let’s do this — let’s handle it.’”
