Santa Clarita life coach Alex Urbina explained how to accept the results of an election in a conscious way — even when they differ from personal beliefs — during a recent “My Conscious Dad” show on KHTS AM-1220.

“You can give people permission to have their own points of views,” said Urbina. “Consider that they have their own opinions and their own reasons why they choose to support a certain candidate, especially when they differ from your own.”
As a millennial, Urbina’s daughter and show co-host Jazmine Urbina reflected on her experiences with her peers, noting that millennials tend to take elections less seriously than older generations, and aren’t as likely to get as upset or angry when the results do not match their views.

“You do not have any past to compare it to, and so you do not let that past fear come up and get in the way of you allowing yourself to be able to agree to disagree and be on the same page as each other,” Urbina explained.
Having faith in the system and trusting that, regardless of the results, everything will work out in the end can help individuals to accept the outcomes.
“Do not let all your fears come out in this moment and have you think of the worst possible scenario, and trust a little bit that we have enough people that we have elected to be on the team to be able to fight and stand up and course-correct so that it does go in a direction that we are all going to be okay,” Urbina said.
Urbina reminds Santa Clarita residents that differing opinions is natural in a society, and without it, life would be less interesting.
“Consider that we are not all going to see eye to eye,” he said. “Your job is to keep remembering that, to keep reminding yourself that if we all thought alike … the world would probably be boring.”

To avoid appearing arrogant and as if you are trying to push an opinion onto others, Urbina advises individuals to free themselves up to accepting any result, and remove the feeling of importance placed upon these results.
“Practice surrendering the need to control the outcome, needing it to be my way or the way that I want it or the way that I think it should be.” he said. “No matter how much it means to me, in that moment, I have to practice being unattached to the results.”
By resisting the results, one is putting unnecessary stress and anxiety on themselves, and the only person they are harming is them, according to Urbina.
“You are the one that is deciding whether you are in alignment with the team or not,” he said. “Or are you that one individual that just wants to make it look your way?”
