Santa Clarita Life Coach Alex Urbina: Parenting ‘Difficult’ Teenagers

Santa Clarita Life Coach Alex Urbina is answering a common question among parents today: Why do teenagers seem so difficult, and what can be done to parent them more effectively?

“As a parent, if you see your kids or your children or your teenagers as becoming difficult to parent, or just having challenges with them, I just want to open up some dialogue,” Urbina said during the latest “The Alex Urbina Radio Show” on KHTS.

Urbina first asked if it might be possible that the reason a parent sees their teenager as being difficult is just a matter of perspective.

“From your current perspective, you’ve created a story that, ‘Oh my God, my son is so difficult,’” Urbina said. “It’s already in your words. You’ve already put them in a box that they’re difficult, and I’ve got to tell you, if you’ve already created that belief that your kids are difficult, well guess what? They’re going to be difficult, because that’s how you see them.”

If a parent is open to this possibility, then Urbina noted that the next possibility to consider is if the parent can then choose to not see their teenager this way by learning how to create a new perspective and shifting their approach with their teenagers.

As a Santa Clarita life coach and the author of “The Inspirational Parent: The Magical Ingredients for Effective Parenting,” Urbina specializes in teaching parents how to become inspirational parents using personal transformation techniques.

Rather than sticking with what he called the “controlling-style” parenting often utilized with young children, Urbina advises shifting the parenting style as children get older and become teenagers.

“The awareness and the awakening to now transition into parenting teenagers in a more effective way is the parenting style that (is) much of a coach or a mentor, where you learn how to inspire or enroll or support them in a different way,” Urbina explained.

He continued that it’s natural for teenagers to realize their competence and confidence and want to start making decisions for themselves, so shifting to this inspirational parenting style is usually much more effective than trying to control.

“It’s today’s kids that are challenging us as parents, that we have to keep evolving,” Urbina said. “We have to keep discovering new levels and higher levels of parenting, and it requires us to and demands us to evolve and learn some interpersonal tools.”
