Santa Clarita life coach Alex Urbina explained why it’s so important for teenagers and young adults alike to be able to express themselves in a sincere way, and the healing that comes from learning to do so during a recent “My Conscious Dad” show on KHTS AM-1220.

“It is a powerful thing when your son or daughter, for the first time in their life, all of a sudden start to get some kind of clarity of how to put into words what they are feeling,” said Urbina.
As a life coach, Urbina works with teenagers and young adults in what he calls “powerful” personal development trainings to help them learn how to genuinely express how they feel.
“Quite often when I work with teenagers, or even young adults, they don’t know how to articulate themselves in a powerful way,” he explained. “They know how they feel, but they don’t know how to translate it into words.”

During the sessions, Urbina will ask participants to identify words that would explain how they feel, and he repeats them back in a slightly different way in an effort to make the emotions even clearer.
“A lot of times they’ll be trying to tell me what they mean, and then I’ll ask them permission to put it in my own words,” he said. “When I’m done, they are excited and they go, ‘Yeah, that is what I’m trying to say — Can you say that to my mom?’”
One young adult, who has been working with Urbina for a while, recently wrote a letter to her mother expressing how she feels articulately and accurately, and in the process, Urbina noted she was able to heal the parts of her that needed healing.
“I want to ask you, Mom or Dad, what kind of a letter do you think your kids would write to you?” said Urbina. “(If) here is a part of them that they really want to share with you in order to give you the feedback, so you can course-correct yourself to be a more effective parent … would you want to hear that feedback?”
This particular young girl’s letter was in response to something her mother posted on Facebook that she did not agree with, and the girl was able to use the tools she learned while working with Urbina to express how she was feeling.
“There’s a part of me that is excited for her, because she is able to articulate this and get it out and put a voice to it,” said Urbina. “It’s almost like the conscious, young, powerful woman in her is actually fighting for the inner child in her that maybe got lost when she was younger.”
