“Like most veterinarians, I’ve had a love of animals my entire life,” Ronchetto said. “I kind of always knew I wanted to do something with animals, so whether that was marine biology or zookeeping or veterinary medicine — it was always going to be something in that realm.”

Towards the end of high school and during her first few years of college, Ronchetto decided to pursue veterinary medicine, and went on to receive her Bachelor of Science degree in biology at the University of California, Davis.

While she worked towards her degree, Ronchetto had several jobs as a vet assistant, vet technician and even kennel attendant in an effort to “get her feet wet.”

“I think that’s really important for anybody that wants to go into this field. It’s not everything that you think it is until you really get in there and see the nitty gritty of what it is,” she said. “So I had several jobs doing that, still really loved it and definitely knew that that’s what I wanted to do.”

After graduating from UC Davis, Ronchetto went on to complete her four years of veterinary school to become a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM).

“It’s medical school; it’s the same as human medical school, (but) we are learning about several different species rather than just one, so a lot goes into it,” Ronchetto said.

Although Ronchetto knew she wanted to specialize in treating dogs, cats and other small animals, she still took classes in large animal medicine and surgery, and recalled a memorable moment that she can now look back on and laugh.

“I tried to stick with the smaller of the farm animals if I could because I’m only 5’2”, so big cows and horses sometimes can be intimidating,” Ronchetto recalled. “So I tried to get the goats and the pigs and the little guys, but on one farm call we were vaccinating a ton of dairy cows.”

The clinician she was working with told her about a “trick” to avoid getting kicked by the cows, where one person pulls their tail up over their back and the other gives the vaccination.

“I still got kicked, and I thought that my arm was broken,” Ronchetto said with a laugh. “I don’t like cows now. They’re a little bit scary to me. I can’t read them — horses you can read better… Cows just go off and kick you.”
