Santa Clarita Veterinarian Discusses CBD Oil And Pets

A Santa Clarita veterinarian is discussing what she called a “huge hot topic” in the animal community today: the use of CBD oil and pets.

Dr. Jaimie Ronchetto of Cinema Veterinary Centre noted that it was only earlier this year that lawmakers made it legal for her to discuss CBD oil with clients, but that it is still illegal for her to incorporate it into a pet’s treatment plan.

“Now as a veterinarian, I am at least allowed to discuss it with clients, to talk about potential pros and cons, but I can’t technically recommend it and I still can’t prescribe it or dispense it,” Ronchetto said. “But if they were to get it on their own, I can advise them a little bit.”

Ronchetto said she believes CBD oil “has its place” when it comes to animals, and can have benefits for pets with anxiety and pain related to conditions like arthritis and cancer.

“But more research definitely needs to be done,” she added. “There are several groups at veterinary schools across the country that are doing that kind of research, specifically for, let’s say, pain in cats.”

With what she called a “big boom” in the industry, Ronchetto pointed out that some CBD oil products will likely be better than others, particularly when it comes to pets.

“There are some CBD oil lines that are being made by veterinarians who are, let’s say, in other states even where maybe this isn’t so much of a problem,” Ronchetto explained. “I would be more inclined to lean towards those products that are being made by vets for animals rather than just some random company.”

Ronchetto advised pet owners do their “due diligence” before trying out CBD oil on a pet, including doing research, comparing brands and consulting with a veterinarian.

“Dosing wise is difficult too. I don’t think we know exactly the correct dosage to use, so there are some guidelines popping up out there,” Ronchetto said. “Please don’t just rely on the internet. Do your research — obviously consulting with your veterinarian is always a plus. We can share with you what we can.”

For those pet owners who are wondering if Ronchetto has seen any results firsthand with her own patients, she concluded, “Certainly amongst my own clients who have gone out and gotten it on their own, I’ve seen some good results with anxiety and pain relief already.”
