Santa Clarita Veterinarian Discusses What Preventatives Can Be Given To Pets During Springtime

Santa Clarita Veterinarian Dr. Jaimie Ronchetto of Cinema Veterinary Centre discusses what preventatives can be given to your pets during the springtime, when animals are more susceptible to certain diseases.

“We’re getting into rattlesnake season and it lasts well into the fall. Really consider getting the rattlesnake vaccine”, Dr.  Ronchetto said. The rattlesnake vaccine can buy your pet time if bit and can decrease symptoms. A rattlesnake bite can be avoided if a pet is kept on a short leash during walks, and by cleaning areas that attract rattlesnakes in your yard.

Fleas and ticks are around more in the springtime and summer. “If they’re not on any kind of flea and tick preventative this is a good time to do it as well”, Dr. Ronchetto explains.

Heartworm disease is more common in the summer. Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes, which linger during the warmer months. “They can get in your house really easy, so even if you have an indoor only dog, we still recommend keeping them on the preventative,” Dr. Ronchetto said. Ronchetto recommends giving your pet a heartworm preventative that is given in the form of a treat.
