Santa Clarita Veterinarian: Do You Need Pet Insurance?

A Santa Clarita veterinarian is weighing in on a common debate among pet owners: do you need pet insurance for your furry friend?

“Pet insurance is a very good idea,” said Dr. Jaimie Ronchetto of Cinema Veterinary Centre. “I do recommend it for all of my patients.”

While Ronchetto noted that it’s usually best to enroll in pet insurance when your dog or cat is still young — before any potential conditions develop — she continued, “Really any time is the right time.”

Each pet insurance company is different, with most companies requiring the pet owner to pay their veterinarian upfront and then submit a claim to be reimbursed, according to Ronchetto.

Some companies cover for both wellness visits — like annual exams and vaccines — as well as illness and injury, and others cover only in the case of illness and injury.

Ronchetto noted that unexpected medical emergencies are usually where pet owners run into trouble financially, making pet insurance the most beneficial in these types of situations.

“If something were to happen, you know that you’re covered and you can go ahead and get your dog or your cat the care that it needs,” Ronchetto said. “That’s when you’re the most anxious and stressed about the situation too, so having insurance already, knowing that you’re covered if some situation like that arises, at least you have that peace of mind.”

A friend of Ronchetto’s recently experienced this situation firsthand when her dog was diagnosed with cancer and needed a number of surgeries and other treatments to save his life, totaling about $5,000 in veterinary expenses.

Having already been enrolled with a pet insurance company, the woman was only responsible for 10 percent of the bills, which ended up costing her about $500, according to Ronchetto.

“She never would have been able to afford any of this without insurance,” Ronchetto said. “It was just very nice that she could just say yes to everything and get the best care that she needed.”

Ronchetto continued, “It takes a little bit of research on the owners part to find out what (pet insurance plan) is going to work best for them, but (it’s) definitely worthwhile.”
