Dr. Jaimie Ronchetto of Cinema Veterinary Centre regularly advocates for searching for new pets at shelters and rescues, noting, “I’m a big proponent for adopting.”

Some people may have reservations about adopting because they don’t know what kind of personality rescue animals might have. Unlike purebred dogs and cats, which might appear to have more distinct personalities based on their breed, some feel wary of adopting mixed-breed animals due to this fear of the unknown.

To Ronchetto, this mindset isn’t always helpful when it comes to choosing a new pet. The Santa Clarita veterinarian argues that even if a family were to adopt a purebred animal, “every personality is still going to be different.”

When asked how someone can learn more about prospective pets before committing to adopt, Ronchetto noted that rescue volunteers can often give a clear description of each pet’s personality.

According to Ronchetto, volunteers “work one-on-one with all the animals as much as they can to figure out their likes and their dislikes so they can get them to the right family.”

Specifically, volunteers and/or staff usually try to determine each animal’s temperament and whether or not they are likely to get along well with other animals in their future homes. This attention to detail may help pet owners feel more informed when they decide to adopt.

The Santa Clarita veterinarian also recommends going to pet fairs, where attendees can meet pets who are up for adoption in person, or looking for rescue pets online.

The KHTS Adopt A Pet video feature series, sponsored by Cinema Veterinary Centre, showcases rescue pets in need of homes from the Castaic Animal Shelter, as well as local rescue organizations.

Whether new owners get their next pet from a rescue or not, all animals require routine veterinary checkups, so it’s important that pet owners book an appointment to help ensure their new friend stays healthy and happy.

Ronchetto said of her own clinic, “We’re here to help you, so come see us.”
