The first supplement Dr. Jaimie Ronchetto from Cinema Veterinary Centre recommends for most dogs and cats is an omega 3 fatty acid supplement in the form of fish oil.
“It’s a really good supplement for their skin and their coat, but also can help with joints, so I think it’s just a good supplement overall,” Ronchetto said.

Fish oil supplements typically come in liquid form that can be measured out and poured over the pet’s food, according to Ronchetto.
“It’s easy enough to dispense,” she said. “Usually they enjoy that it’s a little fishy and yummy, so that makes it really easy. Otherwise, you can use a gel cap and pierce that and put it into their food too, so that works really easily.”
The second supplement Ronchetto recommends is geared toward most middle-aged and senior pets: a joint supplement like glucosamine.
“Glucosamine is a good joint supplement. It helps to protect the joints, helps to try to prevent progression of any kind of arthritis and naturally decreases some inflammation,” Ronchetto said. “(It’s) similar to what we would take, but they come in animal formulas.”
Typically given in treat form, glucosamine supplements can also come in tablets or powder form that can be mixed in with their food, according to Ronchetto.
“So those are my top two that I’m recommending pretty much every day,” she said.

Thanks Doctor! I’ve been using both for years with my pups! Both the fish oil and glucosamine are readily available and usually less expensive at Costco and Sam’s Club. My Golden’s are going to be both 15 years old in a week – and I’m certain that by giving them both fish oil and glucosamine has helped extend their longevity!
