Santa Clarita Filming Adds $33.4 Million To Local Economy

In the 2018-2019 fiscal year, the City of Santa Clarita Film Office recorded 426 film permits for 1,380 film days, generating an estimated $33.4 million in economic impact to the community, officials said Thursday.

This year marks the sixth consecutive fiscal year that over 400 permits and $30 million or more in estimated economic impact generated from location filming was recorded by the Santa Clarita Film Office.

While it was reported that these statistics represent a year-over-year increase in the estimated economic impact in the community, the significance of that increase was not.

“The reason we see so many movie trailers and crews working around the city is because we are in the magic 30-mile zone,” said Mayor Marsha McLean. “Not only do these local productions enhance our economy, but they also provide jobs to our residents. In fact, some 6,000 Santa Clarita residents are employed by the entertainment industry.”

The economic impact of film production on the community is even higher than the numbers imply, as the reported numbers do not include the film days and economic benefit from productions filming on certified sound stages, which do not require a film permit, according to City officials.

Reportedly more than half of the filming days this fiscal year were from television productions, many of which are shows based in Santa Clarita, including “Bless This Mess,” “Future Man,” “Goliath,” “Good Trouble,”,“Holey Moley,” “Mayans MC,” “NCIS,” “S.W.A.T.,” “Santa Clarita Diet” and “Pearson.”

Additionally, more than 30 other television shows and at least 10 film productions filmed on location in Santa Clarita throughout the 2018-2019 fiscal year, as well as numerous commercials, music videos, online content, still photo shoots and student projects..
