30-Car Collision Prompts ‘Multi-Casualty’ Response In Gorman

Several individuals are in critical condition after a collision involving at least 30 vehicles occurred in Gorman, officials said.

UPDATE 5:00 p.m. There are 12 total injuries and one critical patient airlifted to a trauma center in Northrige, according to Los Angeles Fire officials. All lanes were stopped and traffic was being diverted at Frazier Park. The number one lane has opened headed South, according to Los Angeles CHP officials.

UPDATE: 4:15 p.m. The pile-up has left several with minor injuries and with one critically injured. The critically injured patient has been transferred for medical help, according to Los Angeles Fire officials.

Officials with the Los Angeles County Fire Department received reports of a multi-car collision on the southbound I-5 Freeway just after 3 p.m. Saturday.

“We have some cars on fire, and some patients with critical injuries,” said Ed Pickett, dispatch supervisor for the Los Angeles County Fire Department .

The incident reportedly began when three vehicles collided in the southbound lanes, according to data for the California Highway Patrol Traffic Center website.

The incident compounded as more and more vehicles collided with the halted vehicles, due to the heavy fog in the area, according to officials.

“We have visibility only at about 100 feet,” Pickett said.

At least one vehicle has also become fully engulfed in flames, according to officials on scene.

LACoFD officials are treating the incident as a “multi-casualty incident,” in an effort to get the maximum number of units available on scene. This does not necessarily mean that there are any fatalities, according to officials.

Initial reports indicate that two air squads, seven fire engines, two fire trucks, four paramedic squads, and at least six ambulances have been dispatched to the area, according to officials.

Traffic on the southbound lanes had backed up to just north of Frazier Mountain Park Road as of 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

As of 3:30 p.m. Saturday, the exact number of people in critical condition, as well as any fatalities, were unknown.
