A newborn and their mother were transported to the hospital after the mother reportedly gave birth on the 5 Freeway in Gorman Tuesday morning, officials said.

Around 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, first responders received a maternity call on the southbound 5 Freeway near Quail Lake in Gorman, said Franklin Lopez, a spokesperson with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“We received reports of a female passenger going into labor,” said Officer Josh Greengard, spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol Newhall Area office.

By the time paramedics and CHP officials arrived on scene the baby had been born, according to Greengard.

Units on the scene were originally planning on airlifting the mother and child to the hospital, however, the two were transported by ground to an area hospital, according to Fire officials.

Although it is not every day you hear about a child being born on the side of the road, it is not rare for it to happen, Greengard said.
