Santa Clarita Curfew ‘Rescinded’ After Peaceful Protests

The Santa Clarita curfew for Thursday has been rescinded after peaceful protests across Valencia, officials said.

The curfew in Santa Clarita was set for 6 p.m. before being rescinded Thursday, originally due to a large protest bringing potential looters to the City planned for the area near McBean Parkway and Valencia Boulevard.

“In light of the peaceful protests, we have seen today in our City, and in consultation with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the City of Santa Clarita is rescinding the curfew for this evening,” said the City on social media. “There will be no curfew tonight in Santa Clarita.”

On Wednesday, the Santa Clarita City Council unanimously passed a local emergency and 6 p.m. curfew ahead of a possible large protest in Valencia.

“Given the decision by Los Angeles County, along with the overwhelmingly peaceful nature of the protest, we felt rescinding the curfew was the right thing to do,” said Mayor Cameron Smyth.

Earlier Thursday, it was announced Los Angeles County is not planning on extending the curfew after the first countywide order Sunday, according to Sheriff Alex Villanueva.

“Based upon current situational awareness and the recent pattern of peaceful actions by protesters, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will no longer enforce a curfew,” Villanueva said on social media. “Other jurisdictions are free to make their own decisions.”

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit Wednesday against Los Angeles County claiming the curfew is a violation of free speech.

“The curfews’ extraordinary suppression of all political protest in the evening hours plainly violates the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and their blanket restrictions on movement outside working hours violate the Constitution’s protection of freedom of movement,” the ACLU said in a statement.

The peaceful protests occurred throughout the Santa Clarita Valley Thursday, without any immediate incidents reported involving demonstrators.

A “suspicious device” was found near the intersection of the protest, but was later rendered safe, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

No arrests or injuries have been reported due to the protests in Santa Claria as of 4 p.m. Thursday.

Santa Clarita Curfew ‘Rescinded’ After Peaceful Protests

  1. Lots of no shows it looks like and no reason to loot since the majority of town has been closed and boarded up. Thank you to the LE and Nation Guard and Civilians who were there to protect and thwart the next riot. Only a few teenagers are drinking the kool-aid if bullshit. Moving on….

    • It couldn’t just be that these people were peaceful? You has to assume it was because the show of unnecessary force? Fuck you.

    • That’s dumb to say because there’s no reason to thank them everyone was on some peaceful energy except for the one white boy who decided to put us ALL in danger by jumping over into the station lot. Did you have an attendance count of who should have showed up? There was a nice amount of people out. You all are always trying to find something to justify your ignorance. It’s sickening. The guard’s presence was not necessary and the way they were I can see why people get upset and start talking mess to them all. The ignorance in this city is astounding!

    • You people only want chaos…if things go peacefully you will always find an excuse other than just that this is a peaceful cause that’s been turned violent by police.

  2. No curfew sounds a bit risky. The ACLU says so so we better listen. I’m tired of all the special treatment for one race they have black TV, black college , black history month, black caucus, now the governors say they will take money from the police and invest it in black community And black jobs. Wow so much for us all being equal in America

    • Black Looting & Mayheim is a radical left wing hate group. BLM was no where to be found when over 50 young black males were shot in Chicago on New Year’s Eve, and another 10 blacks shot there this past Memorial Day Weekend. I can’t believe millennials drink the kool-aid that BLM is the party of peace. Of course no media coverage or sympathy for 4 x courageous police officers shot in Las Veags by BLM looters ast weekend, or 50 x Secret Service Agents injured while protecting the White House. It is sad how the Democrat party has become extremists, and the Liberal media is there propaganda machine. Be safe, Will.

      • Marcus is right! This past weekend, 80 Chicagoans were shot in drive-by shootings, 21 fatally, the victims overwhelmingly black. They were not shot by the police! Check out an article in the WSJ by Heather MacDonald “The Myth of Systemic Police Racism”. Real data you will never find on the “news”.

        • Intra-racial crime is a problem, but that applies to all races. Minorities are overwhelmingly targeted by law enforcement, even taking into account the higher rate of crime in the minority community. Your confirmation bias is showing, Charles.

          • Really? Your post is a typical flamethrowing comment “Minorities are overwhelmingly targeted by law enforcement” with zero substantiated (key word here) evidence. Not anecdotal comments but real data work. And if intraracial crime is a greater problem, which the data shows, why not attention to that? Chicago crime rates are substantiated.
That said, I appreciate the insight! Thank you, PmC! Be well, be safe.

    • Hi again Will! Man, you have gone off the deep end. You are a complete unabashed racist! Your children must be proud of you! I’m sure you are passing along your racist views to them so that they can carry on the Will family tradition. Well anyway, let me know what you think!

  3. Nothing bad happened today and you all just can’t let it go. You’re a disgusting disgrace to this community. We will all be better off when you die off or move.

    • Ha ha David, David, David you typical liberal, you. When logic fails, resort to name calling, cussing, and elementary school “hope you die” antics. Is it so hard to accept that the looters are a little smarter than they seem? Boarded up businesses + National Guard + Lots of Law Enforcement = we’d better go back to loot in L.A. because these folks are serious. If this community is not to your liking, you can move. You are the disgusting disgrace to the community. There, I came down to your level.

      • You mean up to my level, you horse’s ass? There was never going to be looting here. You demonize a group of people you know nothing about. I’ll take name calling over stereotyping and racism any day.

I’ve lived here for 35 years. I’ve seen the ups and downs of this town. I will not move because of close minded idiots like you. I’ll stay and improve it. The town is turning blue whether you like it or not. Enjoy it! Or, as you say, move. Don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out. Or let it smack that non-functioning brain either.

      • Huge police presence. National Guard. Boarded up businesses. Thank all the officers that absolutely deterred a riot!!!They put a lid on a few situations before it escalated. THANK YOU to the men and women who continue to protect SCV!!

  4. Hey Will,
In all of your comments about the protests you never mentioned wearing masks. You must be losing your touch….

  5. These demonstrations are only peripherally about police brutality against black people. They more importantly are about the brutality of inequality in society at large.
