Suspect In Saugus High Shooting Identified

The suspected gunman involved in a Saugus High shooting Thursday morning has been identified, according to officials.

Nathaniel Berhow, 16, has been identified by law enforcement officials as the suspect believed to have opened fire in the quad at Saugus High School Thursday, injuring three and killing two before turning the gun on himself.

Berhow is reportedly a 16-year-old student at Saugus High, whose father died in December of 2017.

The address that law enforcement surrounded earlier Thursday morning was found to be owned by Berhow’s family, according to officials.

Special Enforcement Bureau deputies searched the residence and found no additional threat, according to Sheriff’s officials.

“We have no known additional threats, no threats to this school or any other school,” said Paul Delacourt, assistant director of the FBI Los Angeles Field Office. “We also have no indication of motivation or ideology at this point.”

The shooting at Saugus High School was reported at about 7:38 a.m. Thursday with multiple reports of shots fired on the campus, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva.

“We are a strong community,” said Capt. Robert Lewis of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “In the days and years ahead, the main thing we need to do is wrap our arms around each other and support each other.”

In the quad at Saugus High, the suspect — who turned 16 on the day of the shooting — pulled out a handgun and fired at several students before turning the weapon on himself, according to Sheriff’s officials.

“The weapon that he used was recovered at the scene. It’s a .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol, which had no more rounds in it,” said Capt. Kent Wegener of the Homicide Bureau.

At least five victims and the shooter were transported to local hospitals, with two airlifted to Holy Cross in the San Fernando Valley.

One 16-year-old female student was declared dead at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital.

Another 14-year-old male student also succumbed to his injuries, according to Sheriff’s officials.

The other shooting victims include two females, ages 14 and 15, and a 14-year-old male student, according to the LASD.

“Our prayers go out to everyone affected,” said Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl L. Osby. “We train routinely for the Sheriff’s Department for these types of incidents.”

LA County Fire responded with 10 engines, seven paramedic squads, 24 ambulances and one helicopter, according to Osby.

All William S. Hart Union High School District campuses were on lockdown after the incident, which have since been lifted, according to district officials.

The motive for the shooting is still under active investigation as of Thursday afternoon.

  1. My question is what is going to happened next ??? Is bullshit because this is going to keep happening over and over sorry to say it there’s no control

  2. Mami my prayers are going out to you! I don’t know why God allowed someone much to happen to you. Through no fault of your own. But I sure hope this all finds some way to strengthen you. My prayers are also with the victims and their families.

  3. Shame on you for posting the name and picture of the suspect, when they won’t do it on TV on any of the local stations.

    • How about shame on him for killing 2 people and injuring others. He has no rights and deserves no protection.

    • Why is it a secret
Are we try to protect someone or is it ok to post my e someone will come forward with some information
About the young man that took 2 life’s and wounded others
Same on you for protecting a killer
      Wow

    • I agree with Susie Evans.

When the name of a school shooter is published, you incentivize copycats. The extra clicks you get for fulfilling morbid curiosity shouldn’t be the driving force behind your news organization. The story can be told without the identity of the school shooter.

    • Are you serious Susie Evans. what does posting the name have to do with any thing. this kid kill 2 kids and hurt other kids. You must know him or related. This is sad beyond sad. All these people at this school will be have to deal with this the rest of there life. the after math and the PTSD. You should be a shame of you self that was a dumb comment.

      • Suzie Evans is CORRECT! It is 100% percent ABSOLUTELY against real journalism standards to name the *alleged* perpetrator of any crime or victim if they are a minor. Period.

      • Most developed countries do not publicize the names of terrorists and murders specifically so others don’t get motivated to replicate it as a chance to claim their 15 minutes of lime light. It is not a matter of “protecting the killer” but denying the killer any attention. It’s not that difficult to comprehend. Why do you want to know the name of the killer? It doesn’t benefit you at all and only “glorifies” the result for anyone that could potentially be on the edge like this guy was.

Denying the killer attention and focusing the attention on the lives of the children that died today is the most honorable thing you can do as a journalist.

    • I saw that CBS had identified him.

    • ‘Incentivizes?’

Of course, the perpetrator must be treated as ‘He whose name must NOT be spoke!’

  4. I agree! We do not need to know who this kids is and isn’t he a minor? Is this even legal?

  5. Why give this boy any credit by posting his name and photo! Disrespectful!!

  6. He is a minor, this is illegal!

  7. He is a minor, this is illegal!

  8. The kids name should be released only after law enforcement is finished with their investigation and they certainly aren’t finished yet and more than likely won’t be a for a day or two.
How low did KHTS go to get the name of the kid, to me, your website is turning a rag like the Signal which has turned into a totally trash website.
You use to have a decent community website.

  9. Was this child on psych meds it seems to be a common denominator in many of these school shootings just trying to understand was he being bullied at school what makes a child at 16 snap

  10. It’s Really a shame that they took all proportions officers from the school’s and cut down on counseling and security. We are not helping our kids and we are not protecting them by cutting the schools help and support. We are not prepared enough to face all this madness and protect our kids ?

  11. It’s a catch 22—One might think by showing pictures/names may glorify others to emulate, but, the more data we have on what type of creatures commit chronic crimes, the more we may be able to prevent them!? Thanks to the Liberals who created & voted for Prop. 47 & 57 and AB 109, creatures like that will get off lightly & be back on the streets to commit more mayhem in short times!! Felonies reduced to misdemeanors with no prison &/or therapy!! LA/Lanc. is moving this way! Thanks, Garcity, Newsome, etc.

    • Jojo,
Gun control is needed here. So, if you want to wag an ugly political finger at a specific group of people, I’d suggest the NRA, Votes who refuse to change gun ownership laws, voters who pride themselves on being gun owners more than they value lives of school age children and other innocent victims of mass shootings. Shame on those people.

      • The NRA has existed since 1871 to promote the LEGAL and safe use of firearms for the benefit of society. The NRA has pushed for laws to take guns from criminals.
California has the strictest gun laws in the country. They don’t work. So adding more that don’t work won’t be effective either.
According to records that ALL of the school shooters so far have been on prescribed anti depressants which bear a warning that they can cause depression or aggression. We will see what this case shows. But the wholesale drugging of our children is neither smart or healthy for them.
The NRA is not to blame any more than the sheriff dept is to blame.

      • no more parental involvement in kids lives

      • MOM,
We do have gun control . The highest in our nation. NO where in the US can a 16 year old walk into a gun store and purchase a fire arm. We just raised the age to purchase all guns to 21. If the hand gun he used was registered to his father’s then the Mom should be prosecuted for not following California law by locking up all firearms in a CA approved gun safe in your home. That is the law. My question is if the hand gun was his fathers and we all learned yesterday that his father took his own life a year or more ago . Then why would the Mother want to keep those fire arms in the house after experiencing such a loss in the family? Was the mother seeking counseling for her son after his father died? Did SHS know of the families situation and were they giving him counseling and monitoring him? Everyone is asking the wrong questions and blaming THE GUN and screaming for more gun control. All of the things I just listed had a better chance of stopping what happened yesterday instead of more gun control. So how can we do a better job?? Talk to your kids and be involved and get to know their friends and monitor their internet use as well as video games and social media. Its your job as a parent to raise your kid. Not society or the internet. I was shocked and disguised about the teenage girl from VHS who told the News last night she wasn’t shocked that this happened due to the is Trumps USA. That misguided girl needs to be watched because her head is being filled full of hate.Trump nor the NRA or even Turners Outdoorsman led to any of this.

  12. I would like to request that news media refer to this person as the murderer rather than the shooter. A shooter could refer to someone target shooting, etc. This person was a cold blooded murderer and nothing else.

  13. here are some serious questions for the journalists:
how and where did a 16 year old get the gun?
who originally told the officials the shooter is an asian when the name and face says otherwise. Did he recently come from japan?
and who organized the active shooter drill just a the few days before?

  14. Do u really believe that with a bunch of kids that LIVE on social media, his identity wouldnt come out? Hello!!!!

  15. It’s funny how everyone on here is blaming the “Gun” and saying we need more “Gun Control”. 2 people died yesterday from a kid who clearly has mental issues. let me ask you this… What about the 900 other people who died yesterday due to distracted driving with a cell phone? Is it the DMV’s fault?
