UPDATE (3:45 p.m.): The “suspicious device” has been confirmed to indeed be intended to cause harm, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s officials.

“It did not contain any incendiaries but was determined to be an item that was definitely designed to cause harm to others when tossed into a crowd,” said Shirley Miller, spokesperson with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “We’re glad someone found it to keep protesters safe.”

The device was deemed safe without incident.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Around 1 p.m. deputies were notified that a “suspicious device” was found in a planter near the Shell Gas Station on McBean Parkway near Valencia Boulevard, where nearly 600 individuals protested against the killing of George Floyd, according to Miller.

“They evacuated the gas station and called in the Arson and Explosive Bureau as a precaution,” Miller said.

Sheriff’s deputies as well as CHP officers worked together to clear the corner to investigate if there was any threat, according to officials on-scene.

As of 2:10 p.m., protesters are still able to protest in the general area, according to Miller.

Officials from the Arson and Explosive Bureau had not yet arrived on-scene as of 2:10 p.m. Thursday.

  1. Nice of them to use a $400,000 robot to check out a backpacker the gas station regular tweaker forgot to take with him.

  2. Geeeeeze almost like it wasn’t the protestors we needed to worry about. Just like those of us protesting said all along

    • They’ve been peacefully protesting at that intersection every day since Saturday. Then local press kept warning about some massive protest planned for today with no source cited, then rumors blew up that hundreds were apparently being bussed in to riot and loot the city, the National Guard got called in, and businesses all over town freaked out and shut down today, boarding up all their windows and leaving good people out of a day of work. On top of all that, several people including a local high school coach have made public threats on Facebook of violence against the protesters. And what ended up happening? Another peaceful protest just like we’ve had every day. Not a single bus full of rioters showed up. And then someone tried to hurt the protesters with this thing.

The fear-mongering in this town is ridiculous. BLM protesters are not some terrorist organization; most of them including everyone who’s been protesting in SCV have been peaceful, all wearing masks and keeping everyone’s safety in mind. The real threat we had to worry about all along were the ones terrified of the protesters enough to want to hurt them. Shame on anyone who wanted to quell their 1st Amendment rights and harm them.

  3. We’ve got a lot of those alt-right bootlicker types around here.

  4. You can say that again. A lot of them were driving by and flipping off protesters and yelling obscenities.

  5. There was a credible threat to all of us. Here are the words of the SCV Captain:https://www.facebook.com/victoria.redstall/videos/10157746378373068/

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
