Krikor Akoubian of the Santa Clarita home cleaning company Aquakor sat down with KHTS AM-1220’s George Cummings recently to discuss countertop cleaning and polishing in SCV homes.

While the most common countertop surfaces are granite and quartz, the cleaning and polishing process is basically the same for all countertops, and it is recommended that they be professionally cleaned at least once every three years, according to Akoubian.

“A lot of people pass on that,” he said, recalling customers that have been having their floors professionally cleaned by Aquakor for 15 years, but have never had their countertops done too. “You see the grout or you see the caulking around the sink… I can take my square knife and scrape the countertop, and I can take at least 1/16 of grease on top of the countertop.”

When caulking is left in bad condition, water can go into the cavities between the backsplash and countertop and deteriorate cabinets. Perhaps more importantly, dirty countertops create an unsanitary environment to handle and prepare food.

“You basically use the countertop three times a day,”Akoubian said. “You have to focus on a clean and healthy, safe environment for cooking and preparing food.”

Having countertops professionally steam-cleaned and polished can also leave them looking brand new again, Akoubian added, increasing the aesthetic and value of the home.

In addition to cleaning, the professionals at Aquakor can also repair cracks or damage to countertops, matching the color to replace a broken piece or gluing a missing piece back into place before polishing it and making it virtually unnoticeable.

“We specialize in repairs,” Akoubian said. “As soon as you see a little crack, (even) a hairline, don’t even think twice because that can grow. You can call us and I can just go in and repair that area.”
