IT Company In Santa Clarita Weighs In On Saddleridge Fire Impacts

An expert from an IT company in Santa Clarita is weighing in on the impacts of the Saddleridge Fire in Sylmar to local businesses and residents, and possible preparations for such an event.

During an emergency or natural disaster like a large brush fire, power outages, spotty WiFi and poor phone connections can have a significant impact on business operations, according to Jeremy Stepan of Resurgence IT.

“Do you know what to do when things go wrong?” Stepan said. 

However, when the Saddleridge Fire raged across Sylmar on Oct. 11, Spectrum reportedly had an internet outage that impacted almost the entire Santa Clarita Valley, making preparation difficult, Stepan added. 

“(Oct. 11) was pretty unique,” Stepan said. “Normally (at) our office, if internet goes down there, we have a failover. If that goes, we could work from home. (On Oct. 11), we couldn’t work from home.”

What’s called wireless point-to-point internet capabilities are a possible backup plan, but Stepan noted that even these have gone out during past brush fires in Santa Clarita. 

Because backup generators that critical facilities like hospitals utilize during an outage are incredibly expensive, Stepan noted that this probably is not an option for most businesses. 

“Small businesses, it’s kind of like one of those things where you cut your losses for the day,” he said. “But you can still plan ahead. With all the technology in the cloud, with Office 365, your email in the cloud, with a lot of business applications that are web-based, hosted, wherever you can get internet access, you can perform some function of your business.” 

Another unique complication of the Saddleridge Fire was that getting out of the Santa Clarita Valley to find better internet access was nearly impossible due to several major freeway closures. 

“You can only have so much failover,” Stepan said. “There’s going to come a time when it all goes bad at the same time, and we kind of experienced a little bit of that (Oct. 11).”
