Over the years, as a gopher control expert in Santa Clarita, so many people have asked me if those “smoke bombs from home depot” actually work or not, I decided I had to put it to the test!
After all, what adult male doesn’t have an inner child, begging for the opportunity to light anything with a fuse, or better yet purports to be a “bomb” of some sort?! So I made an impulse buy at Home Depot and decided to give the bad boy a shot!
To make a long story short, the “Giant Destroyer” brand bombs I received worked one-hundred percent as advertised. In fact, they worked even better… well enough that I was surprised the generally strict and over-regulated California government allowed things so rudimentary and splendid to still be sold on the shelves of Home Depot!

Gopher Control in Santa Clarita has never been so fun! I dug out the gopher holes, lit the fuses, and installed the “Giant Destroyers” as advertised down the hole and covered up their smokey plumes with dirt!
It was TONS of fun… but the efficacy? Well, to be honest? I cannot say, and this is not just a problem with do-it-yourself gas-emitting solutions sold over the counter. There are plenty of gas-based gopher control solutions I’ve seen in Santa Clarita that have the same problem. Unlike trapping, gas-based extermination doesn’t produce a body, and, just as the U.S. court system is based of the idea of habeus corpus, literally translated to mean “show me the body of my accuser” it’s hard to tell if a gopher population has been effectively ”controlled” if you don’t see the body. Without a measurable quantifier of dead gophers it’s hard to tell if a control method is working, worked, or downright failed.
So… my official response to the question of “smoke bomb” efficacy, is “I don’t know… but it sure is fun, so I’d give it a try…and if it fails, you can always call me at Unipest and mention this article and I’ll give you a discount!”

Where’s all the crazy’s saying how horrible this is
Not me… I hate those little rodents for making my lawn look like a par-3 !?
“Local right winger gasses out little brown family from home”
Jajajajajajaja (“Brown person” -e)
They don’t contain any poison. They’re actually just black powder rocket engines, identical to Estes. I’m guessing the stinkiness of the burning sulphur is what encourages the rodents to re-locate. It does not kill them or harm them. They do work, though- I use them myself.
