“(The city) remains a top choice for location filming in the Los Angeles area, as demonstrated by yet another strong year,” said Mayor Marsha McLean. “Filming remains a big part of our business community and local economy by supporting high paying jobs and hundreds of companies involved in the industry.”

Santa Clarita saw an increase in location filming in 2014 with the Film Office recording 502 film permits and 1,339 location film days, an 8 percent increase in permits and a 6 percent increase in film days compared to 2013, according to city data.

The city expanded its Movie Ranch Overlay Zone (MROZ) in October to include Blue Cloud Movie Ranch, 50s Town and Veluzat Movie Ranch, according to a news release from the city.

The numbers represent the second straight year of increases for filming permits.

The Santa Clarita Film Office recorded 1,264 location film days and 463 film permits for 2013, a 28 percent increase in permits when compared to the city’s previous record year in 2012. The economic impact from location filming increased by 41 percent compared to 2012, when the estimated economic impact was $21.7 million.

The economic impact to the local community from location filming in 2014 was $32.2 million, which represents a 6 percent increase compared to 2013 when the economic impact was $30.5 million.

More than half of the location filming days in 2014 were attributed to television shows shooting in the community, many of which were from locally based shows including “NCIS,” “Justified,” “Switched at Birth,” “Chasing Life,” “The Bridge,” “Franklin & Bash,” “Jennifer Falls,” “Utopia,” and “Wipeout.”

Other popular shows such as “Criminal Minds,” “The Mentalist,” “Ray Donovan,” “Scandal,” and “Sons of Anarchy” along with feature films such as “American Sniper,” “Furious 7” and “Yoga Hosers” filmed scenes in Santa Clarita in 2014.

Santa Clarita offers thousands of film-friendly locations that can double as almost any city in the world, officials said. It’s also part of Los Angeles County’s “Thirty Mile Zone,” which offers lower permitting fees and an expedited permitting process.

In April 2013, the city became the first in Los Angeles County to create a MROZ as a way to support existing production and film businesses, while attracting new productions and film companies.

Filming at properties located within this zone benefit from reduced-cost permits and expedited permit processing time, according to the news release.

Sable Movie Ranch, Rancho Maria and A Rancho Deluxe were the first three ranches to be included in the MROZ in 2013.
