Officials with Desert Solace describe addiction as affecting the whole family. The person who directly struggles with addiction is often using addictive substances or behaviors to numb their pain and shame, while family members try to figure out how they can support their loved one.
While the person who struggles with addiction receives counseling and learns how to cope with stress without the aid of addictive substances or behaviors, Desert Solace believes it is also important for family members to get support, helping them learn to set boundaries for a healthy home life which fosters recovery.

Desert Solace’s co-founder and family liaison Jerri Jorgensen explained that the shame at the heart of addiction is often the result of a feeling that they aren’t living up to others’ expectations.
“Usually addiction of all kinds is ‘I’m not enough,'” explained Jorgensen. “‘I’m not enough for my parents. I don’t measure up to my siblings. I’m not enough for my wife. I’m not enough at work. I’m not enough,’ over and over again.”
These perceived expectations are often based on distorted views of what a person should be doing or accomplishing in life. By working with family members to help them learn how to have conversations about expectations and boundaries, both the client and their loved ones can learn to communicate more effectively, leaving less room for shame and self-doubt.
Desert Solace offers weekly teleconference support sessions — one for spouses of married clients and another for parents of unpartnered clients. These sessions act as “a safe place to share, ask questions, and learn about self-care and boundaries for family members,” Jorgensen said.
Moreover, support for clients and their family members remains available after clients graduate from the Desert Solace residential program via private group chat and telephone calls.
“There’s a lot of aftercare that goes on, and we figure out the aftercare plan for them, because we want to stay connected,” Jorgensen explained.
By focusing on recovery as a process that involves both the client and their family unit, Desert Solace seeks to set a solid foundation for ongoing recovery even after their stay at the residential addiction treatment facility has ended.
The first step, said Jorgensen, is reaching out. If you or a loved one is suffering from addiction, Desert Solace offers resources, advice and a friendly ear.
“If you call and you’re not even thinking about residential treatment, we’re still really good resources,” Jorgensen said. “The days of isolating are over. … Let’s move forward and the past is the past.”
