Officials from Desert Solace, a pornography addiction inpatient rehab, discussed some of the ways pornography addiction and sex addiction are connected.

Both pornography addiction and sex addiction are fundamentally behavioral addictions which stem from the desire to numb the pain of shame, said Jerri Jorgensen, co-founder and family liaison for Desert Solace.
Jorgensen described out-of-control porn use as “part of sex addiction,” saying it’s “just another place to … numb the pain.”

There are so many ways to avoid (feelings),” Jorgensen said. “Some are more socially acceptable than others. And with pornography and sex addiction, that has such a stigma.”
Specifically, Jorgensen works with spouses of those suffering from pornography and sex addictions to help them set clear boundaries with their partners.
Many wives of men who are addicted to pornography try to find ways to work around their husbands’ addiction, Jorgensen said. She noted that many women tried to find ways to be “nicer” or “give him sex more,” which doesn’t address the root cause of the addiction.
“Addiction to pornography,” Jorgensen explained, “is a shame-driven disease. A lot more than drugs and alcohol.”
In order to overcome pornography addiction, and to help ensure individuals don’t progress into sex addiction, Desert Solace focuses on getting their clients to engage with their emotions in group and individual counseling sessions.
During their time at Desert Solace, clients can get away from the stresses of their daily lives, including the temptation of always-connected internet devices, and connect with other attendees and with nature through hiking and equestrian therapy.
The pornography addiction inpatient rehab supports both clients and their spouses, with weekly phone calls and conferences between client groups and spouse support groups available.
Jorgensen suggests anyone suffering from pornography or sex addiction call for more information, references, referrals and advice.
“I can suggest a place to go. I can suggest good therapists or just good resources,” Jorgensen said. “So if you call and you’re not even thinking about residential treatment, we’re still really good resources. Because we’ve been there. We’ve lived it.”
