After months of debate, anticipation and excitement, Governor Gavin Newsom of California is not expected to lift the state of emergency on June 15 put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020.
COVID-19 vaccination, a major focus of the office of Governor Newsom, has proven to be successful thus far, but as of May 27, Newsom stated that while he plans to reopen the economy, he does not plan to lift the state of emergency and relinquish his emergency powers that have been in place since March 2020.
“Newsom continues to ignore the data and science by indicating he will extend the COVID state of emergency. Instead, we need to fully re-open businesses and schools right now. We need to focus on rebuilding our economy and getting Californians back to work. Newsom needs to wake up and follow the data,” said Congressman Mike Garcia, R-Santa Clarita.
Over the past weeks and months, officials have administered 28 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to Californians aged 12 years old and up. As of May 27, 2021, a total of 62.8 percent of all eligible individuals have received at least one dose of a vaccine according to Newsom’s office.

“California has already made incredible progress in the fight against COVID-19, with the lowest case rates in the country, while administering millions more vaccines than any other state. But we aren’t stopping there, we’re doing everything it takes to get Californians vaccinated as we approach June 15 to help us fully reopen safely” stated Newsom in the same article.
This declaration, made at a “Vax for the Win” lottery event on Friday June 4, raised many comments and opinions from local politicians and community members, continuing the ongoing debate discussing the ethics of Newsom’s actions over the past year.
“If Newsom believes the state is safe enough to reopen, then it’s safe for people to be able to make decisions for themselves without his arbitrary and capricious rules,” said Senate Republican Leader Scott Wilk (R-Santa Clarita). “I believe it is time for him to hang up his crown and restore our democracy. In California, we don’t grow bananas, so there’s no need for a banana republic.
As the state progresses towards reopening, Newsom stated that he is willing to review and alter different laws and guidelines past June 15, but for now recommends that vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals continue to wear masks in indoor and outdoor venues.

Recommendations have been made that are guidelines that transform into mandates that many, many experts say are counterproductive to a proper pandemic response.
I believe people are confused about our rights. Never, in recorded history of the United States, have healthy people been locked up, forced to wear masks, businesses shuttered and livelihoods destroyed. However, something similar did happen in the late 1930’s through the mid 1940’s in Germany. It was called the Holocaust.

I am an essential worker, worked ALL THEU last year, A LOT, masked & suited up like fighting a plague. I tested regularly, always negative. I have to wear my mask for work but DO NOT wear it otherwise, that is MY RIGHT!! And it’s not fair to say that fully vaccinated people don’t have to wear their masks. I will not be getting this vaccine, nor wear my mask otherwise, that’s my right!!??✌️
So many idiots… Newsom is re-opening the state and lifting restrictions. He’s not lifting the state of emergency. There is a difference. After a fire is out, there is still a state of emergency. In order to receive federal relief funds, a state of emergency declaration, must be in place. The state is recovering from Covid, but we are not there yet.
No, the State of Emergency is officially invoked to combat an immediate, urgent issue when steps must be taken too quickly for legislation to accomplish the needed steps. It’s been well over a year now, there is no longer a threat to overwhelm the health care system (which was the purpose of lockdown measures, if you remember), and legislators have had adequate time to propose any needed regulations for public review.

Even if the situation has zero effect toward them, and changes nothing in their life, personally… They find a way to involve themselves.., It’s hard to understand how the same people who support a man who (completely incompetent) failed to get ahead of this virus, when he was advised and warned months on, and get us ready for it, before it arrived at out front gates… Continued to play it down and encouraged and influenced its spread, out of control, even knowing the amount of damage our economy would endure. With months to prepare, our federal government had all the tools and power to get ahead of this virus, but did nothing. Instead stood there playing games, letting everybody battle it out n their bid to secure PPE in order to keep everyone in their own power to keep safe, healthy and alive. People keep trying to bash leadership that actually cares if you live or die, but defend and support the ones who could give a sheet if we died or suffered severe illness or our loved ones for that matter. So, I find it hard to understand the logic in people refusing to wear whatever protection available throughout this entire pandemic.
