Strike Authorized By Ralph’s, Vons Workers’ Union, Negotiations Still Ongoing

The union that represents grocery store workers in Southern California, including most Santa Clarita stores, authorized a strike Wednesday, as negotiations are still ongoing, officials said.

United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) members in southern California voted in favor of future store actions against the companies should negotiations fail to produce a fair contract, according to Greg Conger, president of Local 324.

The union represents nearly all grocery stores in Santa Clarita, including Ralph’s, Vons and Albertsons, according to union officials.

“It is always healthcare, pensions and better wages,” Conger said. “That is what we are asking for during these negotiations.”

96 percent of the unionized workers at all four chains voted in favor of a strike, according to Conger.

Ralphs earned nearly $2 billion in profits last year and gave executives raises of 19-34 percent while Albertsons/Vons paid investors a quarter billion dollars in cash. Additionally, Ralphs and Albertsons/Vons reaped nearly $2 billion in tax breaks from the recent Trump tax cut, according to union officials.

“The outcome of the strike authorization vote does not change anything related to this process,”  said Melissa Hill director, public affairs and government relations for Vons/Albertsons. “We remain committed to negotiating a contract that is fair to all parties, including our employees, and will continue to work to achieve that.”

A representative for Kroger, the parent company for Ralph’s, was unavailable for comment as of the publication of this article.

Negotiations are set to resume on July 10.

  1. This is an example of what happens when the wealthy are given a disproportionate piece of the tax breaks. They keep it for themselves and the non-producing shareholders that contribute nothing, shifting the financial burden back to us. This is a direct result of the GOP’s contempt for the dwindling middle class. Trump loves to boast of the strong economy without saying it’s strong only for the rich, and that ain’t us!

Vote for fairness and equality; it DOES affect you.

  2. Of course, somebody would make this political, right Denny ??? Well, being that you blame Trump, let’s discuss how weak Obozo’s ineffective business practices were for eight consecutive years. The economy was in the tank for eight years solid. That’s when unemployment was through the roof with stagnant wages for those lucky enough to have a job. Businesses fled overseas so their company profits would soar, and the housing market stayed in the tank. I’ll take Trump’s economy and business practices/policies any day over the DUMBocraps ineffective strategies and policies… TRUMP 2020 !!!

    • Ron, this is not for you, but for anyone reading this who is interested in facts. Perhaps you were too young to understand the financial collapse in 2008 during the GW Bush presidency. The facts are, and they are readily available should you desire understanding of this issue, Obama (not Obozo) came into office in 2009 and immediately went to work on rescuing the economy. Bush damn near bankrupted the country and set the world economy into near disaster. Now, Trump has or is undoing as many of Obama’s progressive policies designed to protect us as possible. The economy appears strong until you see where and to whom the money is going, the uber-wealthy. Most people understand this and have no desire to repeat it. You are welcome to your opinion but not falsehoods. By the way, your spelling… DUMBocrats?

      • Denny, this IS for you… Here are the FACTS… When OBOZO left office (thank God) he had run up more deficit than ALL [previous] 43 presidents combined. Obozo did immediately hand out more welfare, food stamps, and all kinds of other government welfare programs to beat any other previous president in history. Indeed, Trump has or is undoing as many of OBOZO’s FAILED progressive policies, thank God !!! How did those UNaffordable health care premiums / deductibles work out for you ??? Thank you for my opinions because THEY ARE ALL FACTS. Your job is to prove me wrong – which you cannot. And, my spelling is correct… DUMBocraps…

  3. F that. go to Villarta or Walmart. Find any non union market. I did just that after the last strike resulted in huge price hikes. You might be surprised by the quality the other markets offer. Asian supermarkets have better quality produce at an even lower cost. Meats as well. Do what you want but I will not purchase from socialist supermarkets anymore.

  4. What unions vote Bernie and get it all free no more dues.
