Van Hook has dedicated her efforts to provide residents with increased access to educational opportunities, according to a COC news release.

Additionally, Van Hook enriches our community with her advocacy for new and innovative programs and partnerships.

The SCEEC is private-public partnership with a mission to promote environmental literacy in the Santa Clarita Valley.

As part of College of the Canyons,  the SCEEC is dedicated to promoting sustainability awareness and practices both on campus and in the community through events and activities which help people of all ages become more environmentally aware.

Van Hook is a founding member and current member of the advisory board and has been eagerly supporting SCEEC programs and community outreach efforts.

Dr. Van Hook supported the annual K-12 Environmental Science Fair, Environmental Writing Contest and the Green Up Environmental Leadership Conference.

“We have an opportunity as educators to inspire the next generation of leaders and instill in them a love for the world around them, and the sense that it will be theirs to care for,” said Dr. Van Hook. “There’s no better way to do that than through hands-on activities that enable children to experience the joy and wonder inherent in gardening.”

Van Hook also contributed to the the SCEEC’s Western Bluebird Restoration Project by awarding the organization a COC Foundation Chancellor’s Grant.

This partnership includes eight local elementary schools in which students build and decorate homes for the declining Western Bluebird population.

The SCEEC awarded funds to the Emblem Academy for the creation of 14 (two per grade level) portable ‘patio kickers.’

The patio kickers have been used for multiple learning objectives in the classroom.

The purpose of this is for the teachers to use the plant as a teaching tool as they ask students to examine the growth cycle, conduct field research and document their observations.

Emblem Academy principal Jon Baker will formally dedicate the set of gardens in Van Hook’s honor to recognize her contributions.

“Emblem Academy is very grateful for the Van Hook Patio Pickers donated by SCEEC,” said Baker. “The 14 patio pickers will promote student engagement and hands-on learning through gardening, which also supports Emblem’s focus on the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.”

The Santa Clarita Environmental Education Consortium Community Mixer and Garden Dedication Ceremony will be held at the Emblem Academy multipurpose room from 4-5:30 p.m. at 22635 Espuella Drive in Santa Clarita on Wednesday, November 6.

The event is free and open to the public.

Complimentary snacks and beverages will be available along with small door prizes for raffle participants and trivia game contestants.

Information about the SCEEC and its different educational programs and community initiatives will also be distributed to guests.

Local K-12 teachers can view The SCEEC’s classroom mini-grant program, which administers funding to local K-12 schools to help develop and implement environment themed lessons and activities.
