A total of 20 Angeles National Forest (ANF) firefighters are set to deploy to Australia to assist in battling wildfires, officials said Tuesday.
As Australia is in the midst of their summer and fire season, more than 12.35 million acres — a landmass the size of nearly 298 Sand Fires — have been burned, killing at least 25 people, according to Australian media reports.
As a result of the blaze, 20 firefighters from ANF are set to go to Australia to assist in the fire fight.
“It’s really a big honor for the Angeles National Forest, on behalf of the US Forest Service, to be able to assist our brothers and sisters in Australia in this really devastating fire season they’re facing,” said Robert Garcia, the chief for ANF.
The 20 firefighters are set to spend around 30 days in Australia before heading back home, Garcia said.
One of the firefighters being deployed is the son of a retired Los Angeles County firefighter.
“I’m proud that he volunteered to go help the fires in Australia,” said Jerry Tarango, the father of one of the firefighters. “Our whole family is being supportive. It’s a great thing he has an opportunity to do that.”
As of Tuesday, 24 individuals have been arrested in connection with intentionally starting brush fires across Australia.
