A Hart For Seniors: Hart High Dance Team Uplifting Seniors Amidst COVID-19

The Hart High School Dance Team, facing limited opportunities to perform due to the Safer-At-Home order initiated by COVID-19, treated seniors to a special performance at the SCV Senior Center’s Bella Vida Drive Thru on Thursday.

In accordance with social distancing measures, the Hart High Dance Team performed their routine as seniors picked up their lunches from the Bella Vida Drive Thru to provide light-hearted entertainment amidst their already four-month lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Elated Bella Vida guests were able to enjoy the team’s spirited showcase of highly-skilled dance moves and fun choreography,” said Bella Vida officials.

As the team’s first public performance since the start of COVID-19, Co-Captain Gianna Echeverria was thrilled to perform for the first time in four months for the seniors of Bella Vida, according to the Hart Dance Team.

“We are separated,” said Co-Captain Diana Boggs. “Yet we came together as a team to do something for the community. It feels good. It is wonderful to do nice things for others in the current climate of our world.”

“We are thankful to have this opportunity to support everyone,” Co-Captain Nikki Van Ostrand added. “It is a very bonding experience.”

The performance has been very personal for many of the dance team, especially dancer Kayla Malloy who thinks of her own grandparents who have remained at home for four months as a preventative measure to avoid contracting COVID-19. “It is nice to do something for our generation,” Malloy said.

Alongside the performance, Hart High Dance Team Booster Mom Makesh Chambers and daughter Gwendolyn Chambers delivered 100 handmade masks to be given to seniors. They emotionally shared, “As a team, it is important we give back to those in need and we made sure we came here. We have been sewing like crazy.”

The SCV Senior Center Drive Thru Lunch for Seniors serves over 400 meals a day in addition to 700 “Meals on Wheels” being delivered across the Santa Clarita Valley.

“We currently do not have any performances scheduled with the team in the future, but they seemed very enthusiastic about the possibility of returning,” said Robin Clough, volunteer, event and advocacy coordinator at Bella Vida. “They are really a great group of dancers and students and it was so kind of them to share their time and talent with us.”
