A Random Act Of Helpfulness: Honda Donates To Highlands Elementary In Santa Clarita

Organizers with Honda’s Random Acts of Helpfulness campaign took to Santa Clarita Friday morning to deliver over 200 Spanish literature books for students at Highlands Elementary School.

Honda’s Random Acts of Helpfulness campaign has been surprising Southern California residents since 2007 and Highlands Elementary School in Santa Clarita is no exception.

A simple request to the Helpful Honda Group by Señora Holcomb of Highlands Elementary resulted in thousands of dollars of learning materials being delivered to the front of the school by the Helpful Honda Van, according to officials.

“Señora Holcomb was wishing and hoping for Spanish literature books for all six of our Spanish dual immersion classes and her request was granted,” read a statement from Principal Susan Bender of Highlands Elementary School.

At the beginning of the school day, the Helpful Honda Van surprised Señora Holcomb and one of her classes with over 200 Spanish-literature textbooks, providing new materials for Highland’s 2-year-old dual language immersion program.

The bilingual program was recently developed for students to learn varying levels of Spanish throughout their elementary school education, as studies have found young children are more able to assimilate and understand language patterns, according to Saugus Union School District (SUSD) officials.

“The goal is to not only have our students be bilingual, but be biliterate and be able to read and write in both languages,” said Assistant Superintendent Dr. Isa De Armas in 2019.

The initial program outline intended for enrolled students to become fully biliterate in Spanish and English by the end of 6th grade and be on track to receive their high school Spanish credit during middle school, according to SUSD officials.

With the books provided by the Helpful Honda Group, students in the bilingual program have more opportunity to grow in their biliteracy.

“It is these wonderful and amazing random acts of helpfulness that warm your heart and remind you that there are definitely still good things happening in our world,” Principal Bender said.
