Brave New World Comics To Host Variety Of Activities For Halloween ComicFest

Brave New World Comics in Newhall is set to host a variety of activities for the whole family during Halloween ComicFest on Saturday.

On Saturday, Oct. 26, Brave New World Comics and several other businesses are set to bring Old Town Newhall together for a family-friendly Halloween ComicFest event.

So far, over 20 businesses in both the Victoria Plaza off of Lyons Avenue and on Main Street are expected to be involved, handing out both candy and comic books to trick-or-treaters.

“The idea is that you start here at Brave New World Comics, you hit up our plaza and then you work your way up Main Street,” said Andy Liegl, owner of Brave New World Comics.

One of the reasons Leigl says that he hosts community events like Halloween ComicFest is to create “happenstance” moments where people who know each other in their regular lives run into each other and discover that they both love comic books.

“One of my favorite experiences is when two people from life meet in the store,” Liegl said. “I love helping create and being part of happenstance moments like that. We all have a lot more in common than we think.”

While each participating business is set to conduct their own events in addition to the all-ages trick-or-treating, Brave New World Comics is set to host a wide variety of events throughout the day, starting with “spooky storytime” at 10 a.m.

“That’s going to kick off the day,” Liegl said. “Obviously it’ll be all-ages stories. It’s totally meant for kids.”

Then, starting at 11 a.m., children can get their faces painted by Facepainting with Maria, who is set to be stationed outside the comic shop until 3 p.m.

“She has all different kinds of designs,” Liegl said. “Spooky designs, superhero designs, comic book designs, everything.”

In addition to the kid-friendly events, Brave New World is also set to host Revenant Body Art, a relatively new and local tattoo shop, for both custom designs and quick “flash tats.”

“Flash tattoos we can do the day of,” Liegl said. “You can just walk up, decide and go. But if you want your own custom design, you have to do that in advance.”

Attendees can choose any of the designs above on the day of starting at $80, according to Liegl.

During the event, Brave New World Comics is set to host Space Wolf Studios artists Travis Ames, Kempo Cornelius and Chris Northrop. After working on the Vox Machina comic series, Northrop and Ames formed Space Wolf Studios, and are currently working on their own series, Outrun City.

“They’ll be doing original sketch commissions at two different price points,” Liegl said.

Guests can pay $40 for a black and white sketch of a character of their choice, or $65 for a colored sketch. Orders can be arranged ahead of time with Brave New World Comics, or on the day of on a first come, first served basis.

Additionally, writer David Avallone is set to be at the event. Avallone is known for his work writing the Elvira: Mistress of the Dark comic series, as well as Drawing Blood, a series from the creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Kevin Eastman.

On top of all this, several booths are set to be outside the store during the event, including a station from Honu Coffee.

Halloween ComicFest is set to take place Saturday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  1. Who the hell goes to Main Street where all the Mexicans hang out? Until the seedy element is removed I dont see any business able to sustain being in business long term in that area.
