California DMV Encourages Travelers To Be REAL ID Ready For 2020

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) encourages residents to make a New Year’s resolution to be prepared if they plan to fly within the U.S. after Oct. 1, 2020, officials said.

“With the October 2020 REAL ID federal enforcement date in sight, we hope Californians will make a resolution to be #REALIDready so they are able to fly domestically,” DMV Director Steve Gordon said. “Anyone who shows up at the airport this October without the correct ID risks being turned away. We urge Californians to beat the anticipated last-minute rush and take care of their REAL ID needs today.”

Starting Oct. 1, 2020, any individual who plans to fly within the United States or access federally secure facilities and military bases is expected to be required to have a REAL ID or other federally approved document, such as a U.S. passport, according to DMV officials.

Californians applying for a REAL ID are required to visit a DMV field office with the following items:

  • An identity document, such as a valid passport or original birth certificate. If a resident has changed their name, a legal name change document might be required, according to officials.
  • A document with the entire Social Security Number visible, such as an original Social Security card or W-2 form.
  • Two hard copy documents showing California residency, such as a utility or cell phone bill, bank statement or mortgage bill.

With lines at DMV offices shorter than ever, the DMV’s resolution is to keep wait times low. Californians can do their part by completing the required application online beforehand and being prepared for their visit to a DMV, officials said.

Appointments are not required to complete an in-person REAL ID application, and customers can check wait times at nearby offices on the DMV website.

Many DMV offices also offer Saturday and extended morning hours. A full list of DMV offices and operating hours can be found here.

  1. This whole federal real id act is a waste of time. I have no intention at this time wasting 5 hours or more at the local dmv just to get a stupid star on my licesne. Plus looking for all of these documents is time consuming. If trump goes through with this it will be a campaign issue especially close to election time. Getting a passport is easier than real id and that is sad.

  2. Nope I’m good for now another stupid Trump law for a stupid star really Trump? Waste of time weirdo!!

  3. I totally agree with you and I think there is a lot more to it. I’m getting a passport as well. It also extends to entrance into govt buildings as well.

  4. Before you get online to bash President Trump why don’t you educate yourself? President Trump has nothing to do with this law. The House of Representatives passed a spending bill with the Real ID rider 368–58, and the Senate passed the joint House–Senate conference report on that bill 100–0. President Bush signed it into law on May 11, 2005.
