California Free Fishing Days In 2022

The California Department of Fish and Wild Life (CDFW) announced Sunday that there is scheduled to be two free fishing days later this year for anglers across the state, including in Santa Clarita.

Every year the CDFW has two free fishing days, this year the days are set to be Saturday, July 2, and Saturday, Sep. 3, when anyone ages 16 or older can go fishing without a sport fishing license, affecting creeks, rivers, lakes, and beaches.

While free fishing is going to be allowed, some regulations are still set to be in place. Bag size limits, gear restrictions, report card requirements, fishing hours and stream closures are still set to be in effect, according to CDFW officials.

“Fishing in the City and Free Fishing Day clinics are designed to educate novice anglers about fishing ethics, fish habits, effective methods for catching fish, and fishing tackle,” CDFW officials said.

Kids under 16 do not require a license but every rule still applies.

On California’s Free Fishing Days, every person fishing must have the appropriate report card if they are fishing for these species:

  • Abalone
  • Steelhead
  • Sturgeon
  • Spiny lobster
  • Salmon in the Smith and Klamath-Trinity River Systems
