Canyon Country Gym Continues To Operate Indoors Despite County Directive To Close

A Canyon Country gym has continued to allow members to use indoor gym facilities despite the directive to shut down such operations “until further notice” under the recently revised Los Angeles County Public Health Order.

On Thursday, KHTS received several reports that the Crunch Fitness location in Canyon Country was continuing to allow members to utilize indoor gym facilities.

These reports came less than a week after officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health revised the current Public Health Order, closing indoor operations for multiple businesses, including fitness facilities.

“Fitness facilities, including private gymnasiums, may be open for outdoor operations only,” the order reads. “The indoor portions of Fitness facilities are closed to the public until further notice.”

On Friday, several individuals were observed entering the gym facility in work-out attire. When KHTS called the location, an employee confirmed that the gym was still open, but requiring members to wear facial coverings, and employees were keeping a headcount of the number of people within the building.

Additionally, several classes were available for members to sign up for on the location’s website, with the earliest including a cycling class and a Zumba session for the morning of Saturday, July 18.

KHTS reached out to Jabari Day, who is listed as the location’s general manager, for comment, but had not heard back from him as of Friday afternoon.

Much like many of the franchise’s other locations across the country, the Crunch Gym location off of Soledad Canyon Road had previously closed down since stay-at-home orders were issued nationwide back in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Canyon Country location had remained closed for several months before being allowed to reopen on June 12.

However, as infection rates continued to rise throughout the state, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced Monday that indoor operations in fitness centers, places of worship, offices for non-critical sectors, personal care services, hair salons, barbershops and malls were to cease “effective immediately” in select monitored counties, including Los Angeles County.

As of Thursday, a total of 3,778 cumulative cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Santa Clarita Valley since testing began in March. These include:

  • 1,720 in the City of Santa Clarita*
  • 60 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country
  • 1,830 in Castaic*
  • 11 in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
  • 88 in Stevenson Ranch
  • 27 in the unincorporated areas of Valencia
  • 35  in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde
  • Four in the unincorporated areas of Newhall
  • One in the unincorporated areas of Bouquet Canyon
  • Two in unincorporated Sand Canyon

*As of  Thursday, July 16, officials had recorded 1,318 cumulative cases among prisoners at the North County Correctional Facility, and 493 at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center. Those cases are counted in both the City of Santa Clarita and Castaic totals.

Additionally, 37 cases have been confirmed in nearby Acton as well as 15 in Agua Dulce.

  1. Looks like I found my new gym!!????1

  2. Good for this owner! God bless his courage! If you don’t want to go, don’t go. It’s high time business owners take a stand against this power hungry Governor who is able to keep his own winery open and operating.

  3. So, CLOSE THEM DOWN! You know where they are, you know they are operating illegally! Just DO IT!

  4. This is Crazy Otto’s all over again: where the Karens go without caring. Shut it down and fine them heavily. They are putting us at risk at the time case numbers are at an all-time high and climbing.
And screw his faux courage and don’t tread on me attitude.

  5. Love the loudmouths on here with their fake names. Bunch of cowards.

  6. Fine them everyday they are open. This type of rebellious behavior needs to stop. I don’t care who our governor is but if he said close then close. People are dying do you not see this or do you not want to face the truth or think you won’t get it. People just are not smart anymore

    • No it’s just young like me are sick of old like you saying it’s your way or else. so my new veiw is you get it you deal if you die that’s your prob, for not staying home snitch.

    • To those who think this gym taking a stand is a bad thing, please do your own research on the “numbers” and stop consuming the spoon fed narrative. Your quality of life, and the quality of life for those around you will drastically improve. Please look into the opposing science that your “not allowed to hear”. It is far more credible and logical than what you are told to live and die by. We come from a place of love and understanding. For just a moment, put aside the radical hate that blinds you from seeing things intellectually, and you will see.

    • Our of the just under 5 million active cases worldwide, 99% have LITTLE TO NO SYMPTOMS, so who is dying from this, you mean the .02% globally, which is far less than the normal mortality rate before Covid..Know the FACTS so you can think for yourself instead of being a parrot and just repeating what staus quo is. GOOD for this gym. Others need to follow suit so we can STOP accepting the BS that statistically DOES NOT make sense. Why are we not asking WHY behind all this BS.

  7. Yeah, these kids of ethics also extend to their billing practices. You have been warned.

  8. Glad to see they are staying open, and it’s members who are grown adults are aware of the risks. The CA communist governor needs to stop over stepping our civil liberties.

  9. Maybe if he was operating this gym illegally from a cart on the side of the road you could get the hypocrite dems to all come out and work out for the day in support

  10. I’m a member but I sign up for ufc now crunch took over and they are not clean the gym used to be clean the front door looks duty all the time the front desk staff never knows anything. it is a lie that they wear a mask as soon as they walk by the front desk most of them take off the mask. UFC coaches were much better with the exception of cycling guy so if you want to sign up and like to take the classes think about it or you’ll be stuck with a membership like me. Thinking about canceling is just very convenient for me 3minutes drive

  11. We opened too soon and now we’re back to April. Macho Republicans are a menace to society.

  12. I see nothing. I hear nothing.

  13. I hope you idiots get sick. Great opportunity to thin out the herd. It’s a bit dense at this time. Have a great workout.

  14. So the cases in Castaic and Santa Clarita are being counted twice? There’s actually approximately 1800 cases less than the 3900plus that’s being reported? Why count the jail cases in 2 areas?

  15. These folks have a better handle on the reported numbers. All of a sudden everybody is an expert and these public health folks and their statisticians don’t know squat. Let some of these folks “interpret” the “real” numbers for you. Good luck to you all.

  16. Here we have a gym trying to stay afloat, everyone is shouting to shut them down. At the same time we have unlicensed street vendor, who the public is shouting to leave alone. The gym has a handful of people in it but it’s okay for 100+ to line up to fruit from an unlicensed vendor. How is one better the other other?

  17. 2% death rate in California and dropping!……run and hide?!?!

    Losers!

  18. Stay in your own lane. Mind your business, not mine. Keep your opinions to yourself. You do you, I’ll do me, Mrs. Kravitz.

  19. Shut them down!! Fine them!! Boycott them!! Their operating illegally!!! They can’t do whatever they want!!!

All of that above applies to that illegal fruit cart down the street? Where’s the uproar? Instead you defend them….

Hypocrites, plain and simple. Look in the mirror.

  20. I sure hope nobody throws a ‘cocktail’ through their window and burns it to the ground! ?

    • The ATF doesn’t give courtesy knocks. When they see your post they don’t care if you’re just a keyboard warrior or how many times you’ve download toughguy.com they won’t leave until the teardrop trailer you live in is upside down.

  21. Arn, man talk about taking way beyond an opinion or personal views. You Sir, need a rude awakening from some real life taxpayers.

  22. No. I’m NOT threatening anyone, and would never do such a thing! Just saying, in these crazy times, things happen. Who knows what anyone’s thinking? Only reason I said that is the current mentality is such that it leans that way! That was the reason for the emoji. People love to take things out of context these days for their own reasons. ?

  23. well if Newsom gets to keep his wineries open and receive 350,000.00 small business help loan from the government which no doubt he will never have to pay back, then why wouldn’t all places of business do the same as this gym, i know I would if i had a business. This stupid state makes no sense.. and to see Garcetti wearing NO mask at rally on his knees inches away from people, then you can either say hypocrite or a liar, or just a puppet of the Newsom BS brigade..Stop controlling our lives… this has turned this country into a communist country, pretty soon we will only be able to leave our house to get only food if you keep listening to the false numbers. stop driving your car you may get in an accident, stop walking you may trip, stop eating you may get fat, stop taking a shower your wasting water, the list goes on..

  24. Not at all, Clown! If anyone is a BAD GUY, it’s YOU!! LOL!
