Castaic Brothers Raise Over $1,100 For Deputies Ambushed In Compton

An 11-year-old from Castaic and his 8-year-old brother hosted a soda stand over the weekend, where they raised over $1,100 for the two deputies who were shot in an ambush in Compton earlier in September.

On Saturday, Sept. 12, two deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department were shot multiple times in a patrol vehicle outside of the Metro station in Compton. Both were hospitalized in “critical condition.”

The event spurred 11-year-old Max Durfee and his brother, 8-year-old Carson Durfee, to take action in order to raise money for the injured deputies.

“They came up with a clever idea of making craft sodas and selling them on the corner near their home,” reads an official post from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Over the course of two days, the Durfee brothers hosted a soda shop at the corner of Byron Place and Alton Way in Castaic. Their goal was to raise $300 for the two deputies, who have both since been released from the hospital as of Wednesday.

By the end of the weekend, the pair had raised a total of $1,116.

On Tuesday, the brothers presented their weekend profits to Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva, who was “grateful and frankly taken aback,” and proceeded to thank the Durfees for their “generosity and civic mindedness.”

“People are reaching (out) from all corners of the county, in fact all corners of the nation have stepped up and really showed that they care about law enforcement,” he told the brothers Tuesday. “You guys take the cake right there.”

Both deputies are currently recovering from their injuries at home, and the reward for information leading to the capture of the shooter has grown to $640,000.

“They’re doing better, they still have a long ways to go before they fully heal, but at least they’re on the path, and we’re getting closer every day to catching the people who did it,” Villanueva said.
