The Child and Family Center is set to display an art piece titled “Hope within the Deconstruction” in Santa Clarita City Hall in honor of Denim Day.
The piece was made to show support for those who have experienced sexual violence, according to officials.
Denim Day started in response to a 1998 Italian Supreme Court ruling that overturned a rape conviction. The chief judge argued that, because the victim wore tight jeans, she must have helped her rapist remove them, according to city officials.
“Hope within the Deconstruction” is made of deconstructed jeans to emphasize that a person’s wardrobe is not an invitation for sexual activity, officials said.
Each denim square features a message of support written by students in the Santa Clarita Valley. City officials hope the piece promotes education about sexual boundaries and shows empathy for survivors.
The art piece is on display until Friday, May 31, at Santa Clarita City Hall, located at 23920 Valencia Boulevard. For more information about the art piece, please contact the Child & Family Center outreach specialist at (661) 259-9439.
