Chiquita Canyon Landfill Employees Donate 93 Bikes To Kids In Santa Clarita

Chiquita Canyon Landfill employees donated 93 hand-built bicycles to local kids for the holidays on Friday.

This is the 5th year that employees of Chiquita Canyon, which operates a landfill in Castaic, have built and donated bikes to local kids for the holidays, according to spokesman John Musella.

“Chiquita Canyon does this program every year, it’s called Christmas Promise,” Musella said. “We work with different nonprofits to find kids who’ve never had a bike before. And it’s really cool to see them get their first bike, start riding it, and see the light in their eyes of the holidays and give them something special.”

36 of the bicycles were given to volunteers with Santa Clarita Grocery, a local non-profit that provides groceries for about 350 families in need every month. They plan to distribute the bikes to local families in their service network, according to founder Bradley Grose.

“For us to be able to do this is really just bringing Christmas joy, holiday joy to some of these people who are having a rough time in life,” Grose said. “This is just an opportunity to give back in an even greater way besides just nourishment. To really bring some joy to their kids.”

Santa Clarita Grocery is a volunteer-run non-profit based in Santa Clarita. They provide fresh milk, eggs, meat, and produce to local families every week on Wednesday and Saturday, according to Grose.

The bikes were handed off to Santa Clarita Grocery volunteers at an event Friday afternoon. A few local families were on hand to receive bikes. The kids picked out the bikes they wanted and rode them around together before taking them home. Leonardo Rivas was there with his three kids Micah (5), Esther (9) and Leo (11).

“It’s really a blessing, it means a lot,” Rivas said. “They had one bike that they were all sharing. And this year’s been hard, so to see the smile on their faces having their own bikes, that’s all that matters.”

This is the second year Chiquita Canyon has partnered with Santa Clarita Grocery for their annual bike donation. Santa Clarita Grocery plans to distribute the bikes at their Canyon Country location this coming Saturday and Monday, according to Grose. The remaining 57 bikes are set to be delivered to the Boys and Girls Club.

  1. Yes, that’s what big corporations do. They donate to local charities while polluting the air and water. Landfills are one of the largest generators of methane, a highly polluting greenhouse gas. We need to find ways to divert trash from landfills and create less waste, not laud a landfill for a charity donation. They give bikes while causing asthma? What does the community need most? Bikes or clean air?

    • Mr. WaterWatcher: thoughtful response from what small people do, pee on acts of kindness. What good have you personally done this year Mr. Watcher? We would love to know to celebrate you. Would you possibly need an Opta-rectomy?

      • Ms. Happy- stop acting like your trash doesn’t stink. Where does yours go?
Waterwatcher made a couple good points. Just because you didn’t understand the irony stated, don’t feel obligated to pee on those comments, dip-squat.

      • Waterwatcher made two good points Ms. Happy(?). Perhaps you do not appreciate the irony that was pointed out. As a suggestion maybe you should watch where and who you urinate on.

  2. Yes so grateful to Chiquita Landfill who donated to SEVERAL NON PROFITS in Santa Clarita. It would be great to list all the organizations that they help!!!! They are a great company that gives back to the community during Thanksgiving AND Christmas!

  3. I applaud the workers who build and supply the bikes for the kids and less fortunate among us But I don’t and won’t applaud the Chiquita Canyon landfill Co
This is the same organization that signed and extended contact to dump trash in our community and then sued the county so they didn’t have to pay the royalties to help this community The only people who applaud this company are the ones that don’t live near them like I do
