City Of Santa Clarita Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The City of Santa Clarita released a video Monday celebrating the life and achievements of the civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on what would have been his 92nd birthday.

On Monday, Jan. 18, Santa Clarita residents were able to join Mayor Bill Miranda, as well as members of the Santa Clarita City Council and the Human Relations Roundtable, for a special video program that explored the life of Dr. King, as well as the wisdom and virtues he championed in the speeches he gave.

After years of emerging as a national civil rights leader, King delivered his famous “I Have A Dream” speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial before over 200,000 people in August of 1963.

King went on to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, helped organize civil rights protests in Selma, Alabama and delivered a speech against the Vietnam war before he was assassinated on Apr. 4, 1968.

“What Dr. King means to me is hope in the face of discrimination and injustice,” Miranda said. “He believed in the brighter future. He believed that together through kindness and service. We could build a better world. He gave his life for that belief.”

Miranda was joined by several members of the community, including teachers, non-profit leaders, fellow members of the Human Relations Roundtable, and students from local schools.

“I appreciate Dr. King because he forces us to confront the reality that racism and Injustice still exists in our world today,” said William S. Hart Union High School District Superintendent Mike Kuhlman. “He challenges us to examine ourselves to see if there is any conscious bias or unconscious bias that contributes to racism and injustice. He calls for us to do something about it — not just to talk, but to act — to build a better world for us all.”

In 1983, then-president Ronald Reagan signed a law making King’s birthday a federal holiday, to be observed annually on the third Monday in January.

Eleven years later, the United States Congress designated that same date as the annual King Day of Service, meant to encourage community volunteering in King’s honor.

“There has never been a time as appropriate as now you want to take time to honor and recognize the words and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King jr. This last year saw a renewed call for social justice and an end to racism and discrimination of all forms. It also saw the largest health crisis of our lifetimes,” Miranda continued. “Through these challenges, the example of Dr. King continues to be a beacon, a model that can guide us as individuals and as a community to come together, to give back through service and treat each other with kindness.

The mission of the Human Relations Roundtable is to encourage and assist our community to eliminate all forms of racism and discrimination and to promote inclusion, understanding and appreciation of human differences, according to the City

Residents are encouraged to visit scvhumanrelations.com to download a checklist of Acts of Kindness and Service that can be performed in the community. These acts can be completed by people of all ages and range from simple tasks, such as writing a letter of gratitude to a first responder, to more involved, such as volunteering time and paying for a stranger’s groceries.

“As Dr. King said, the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenges and controversy,” Miranda said. “I thank you for joining us for the celebration of Dr. King and I encourage you all to find ways big or small to give back and to help each other. Together we can make Dr. King’s vision for a brighter future a reality.”

  1. Too bad more people didn’t listen and follow his wonderful teachings and share his great legacy with their children!!

  2. He’s turning over in his grave with the behavior of BLM/Antifa and the Liberal cities from Seattle to LA, Chicago, Baltimore, Minneapolis, Kenosha, Philadelphia, Detroit, NY, etc.! A shame with the wonderful teachings of a great man!
