City Of Santa Clarita Prepares For Large Protest On Thursday

As protests continue to break out around the nation over the death of George Floyd, an African American man who was arrested in Minneapolis and subsequently died in police custody, officials with the City of Santa Clarita are preparing for a large protest in Valencia reportedly planned for Thursday.

On Monday, officials with the City of Santa Clarita issued a statement expressing that they are “aware of the planned protest on Thursday, June 4, at noon near the intersection of Valencia Boulevard and McBean Parkway.”

“All protesters who wish to assemble peacefully and share their feelings and concerns can assemble in the City of Santa Clarita,” the statement reads. “Those looters and rioters who are looking to cause damage and steal property will be arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

Preparation for the protest began after an anonymous social media post circulated throughout several Santa Clarita groups Monday. The post claimed that a protest with “800+” attendees had been “permitted by the city,” and that protestors would be “bussed in” from other parts of Southern California.

However, Santa Clarita Mayor Cameron Smyth disputed some of this information.

“There is no permit that has been issued by the city,” he said. “We have no confirmation of the numbers of participants, nor do we have any firm indication that people are set to be bussed in.”

The planned protest on Thursday, along with every protest in Valencia over the past several days, came to be after the death of George Floyd, an unarmed African American man who died in police custody after being arrested in Minneapolis for allegedly attempting to purchase groceries with a counterfeit $20 bill.

After officers were able to detain Floyd with minimal struggle, video footage of his arrest taken by a bystander shows a Minneapolis police officer with his knee over Floyd’s neck.

“Please, I can’t breathe,” Floyd can be heard crying in the video. “Please man.”

The circumstances leading up to this moment are still under investigation. Floyd later died in police custody.

“The evidence is clear, George Floyd died at the hands of four police officers – all of whom should be prosecuted,” said Santa Clarita Mayor Cameron Smyth. “This brutality by sworn peace officers should alarm all of us, and we must work together to ensure Mr. Floyd’s death leads to the reforms necessary to the benefit of all communities.”

Protests have taken place at the intersection of Valencia Boulevard and McBean Parkway every day between Saturday and Monday. Each day, protests ended peacefully, with no injuries or arrests being reported.

“We are working together to ensure we have the resources we need to protect the community of Santa Clarita,” said Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Captain Justin Diez. “We hope to once again have a peaceful protest.”

City officials advised nearby businesses to “be ready to close up should the need arise.”

“Residents who do not need to be in the vicinity of McBean Parkway and Valencia Boulevard should avoid the area on Thursday,” Monday’s statement reads.

City Of Santa Clarita Prepares For Large Protest On Thursday

  1. Oh, GREAT!!!
Now they wanna come HERE to loot OUR local businesses?! You gotta be kidding!!! After all these protests have done to each city where they’ve gone, they’re going to give it to OUR town? I realize that the good protesters may march peacefully, but these other idiots are gonna ruin it, like they have all week! What can I say, if you’re stupid and invite trouble, you deserve getting it! ?

    • The message is lost enough is enough if these store fronts need security I’m sure there are proud Americans of all races who would be willing to stand and protect American businesses from these thugs if the cops and governors are to afraid to do so.

      • Answer my question.

        • watch George’s brother on tv, put on a great act then told everyone to stop destroying their city, and ended up by saying go vote. This is all political in my opinion , not the death but a certain party taking advantage. It’s been said there are people coming in from other area who are inciting the looting, etc. Not surprising there, not only targeting the big cities, but they are wanting to destroy communities with money . Ever wonder what our democratic democrats are really doing? Newsom singed a law stating No Bail, so the money we are spending on police doesn’t matter cause once they are arrested they are let go with NO Bail, all political So again, what are these Democratic leaders planning after they have allowed this nonsense to happen with the help of their leader George Soros

          • No, I never wonder what our “Democratic Democrats are doing.” Besides a problem with racism, this nation has a big problem with dumb. Try not to be a part of it!

          • I agree with you. This is all planned to bring down the president and our country. Did you see the truck dropping off bricks in I think New York? Now they are giving the people permits to destroy Santa Clarita. Unbelievable! I have traveled everywhere and I have yet to see any racism. We talk and joke with people of all races when we travel.

          • You sound like a RACIST! There are major problems with policing in our nation. Go back under your rock.

        • I did but those like you are already convinced and unwilling to learn.

      • If the message is “lost” as you put it, then you were never FOR the message. Nobody wants looting & destruction. That’s a given. But peacefully protesting for reform in Law Enforcements treatment of Black people in this country… gotta be for that.

    • The biggest KKK Rally in 1966 was here in Santa Clarita! It’s about showing a change is possible!

    • Nobody said anything about looting you dummies. There have been peaceful protest at the intersection since Saturday.

    • Hi lisa, I’m former Valencia resident. Regarding organized protest from outside the area. Check out 2 minute interview; youtube Soros paid protestors

    • Thank your local City Council

    • Hi Lisa. I’m Lisa R. Please know that our Community Leaders are preparing for ALL situations. I hope everyone will just be home safe and sound. Have faith and we will survive either way. Take care

  2. If they do not live in this community, send them home!

    • Amen Honestly this has gotten to the point that it’s not a damn protest it’s a pathetic excuse to make an easy come up of an already really bad situation I’m sorry this is not protesting bombing police cars and destroying high end stores on Rodeo drive like Gucci and Alexander McQueen is NOT A FUCKING PROTEST NOR ANYTHING TO DO WITH BLACK LIVES MATTER GIVE ME A BREAK

      • you are right, these protest don’t care about George, its’ about politics and here is why: 1) Mueller report was b.s. with no results, and many lies 2) they couldn’t impeach, while Nancy held onto the orders, one wonders why? Was she expecting to start this pandemic? AFter all she was in China in November, and in Feb she told everyone to come down to china town cause all is right. 3) Americans had Peaceful protest to allow us to leave our homes. That showed a failure to the democrats, so they took it another step, went to their owner George Soros, took a bad situation and ran with it. 4) so leaves us to believe the democrats are doing something behind our backs while these riots are happening. Newsom signed a bill that says No BAil, so when our police are out there protecting us arresting these hoodlums, they go to jail, and are released immediately . What are these politicians really doing while this is going on. Its’ all political for them after Biden made the racist remark, they had to come back with something worse to attack the president, sad

    • Absolutely. These are supposed to represent the community. If people are being bussed in, going from neighborhood to neighborhood, that’s a fake demographic.
Let’s be real and allow only residents.

    • Actually I’m featured in this photo and I’ve lived in Santa Clarita for 27 years. But why should it matter if people protesting are not from this community? The protests here were peaceful and there were many supportive Santa Clarita residents and cops there today. Please don’t judge so quickly, most people have solid, peaceful intentions in this and don’t define with violence and looting. Thank you.

    • According to many , most of these don’t leave in any of these communities, they are paid to go out there and incite more riots, and destruction.

  3. No, enough we do not need looters using an excuse to do damage to hard working people. Enough using Floy tragedy to hurt the country is scam criminals are using. His family wants this criminals to stop in FLOYS NAME IS DISGUSTING WHAT THEY DOING IN HIS NAME. HE IS BEING VICTIMISED BY THIS CRIMINALS SO CALL PROTESTERS. I HOPE THE SANTA CLARITA POLICE DEPARTMENT STOP THIS CRIMINALS.

  4. How about they go help the business owners clean
up, at the very least. Use that protesting energy for some good.

  5. AMERICAN BUSINESSES MATTER

I agree ALL LIVES MATTER but how about: AMERICAN BUSINESSES MATTER!
How about the big guys that drive these trucks around town with the AMERICAN FLAGS on them and the AMERICAN BIKERS showing up to help protect the businesses.?

    • This movement isn’t about all lives. We’re focusing on black lives. How many times do we have to repeat this? Anyways, glad there’s a protest here, can guarantee I’ll be attending. I hope it doesn’t get to the point which we have for riot but if I does, just pretext yourself and your loved ones most. Anyways, no justice, no peace. Have a good day ! : )

      • It’s about the attention seeking immature losers nothing more get over yourselves. Stop blaming your crappy life on others

      • Yes you are the new racist ones in America now your comment right there proves it and there is no place in America for you racists. Sorry but all lives matter not just the black ones

        • Hey Will,
The reason why we say BLM instead of ALM, is because we understand that ALL lives matter, but not all lives are being treated the same. Just because you don’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s not happening. You live in Santa Clarita, of which the residents are about 48% white, and less than 5% are African American. The goal of the protests arent to be violent but to raise awareness of police brutality particularly against black people. However, there are people who take advantage of the situation to riot and loot violently. These looters do not represent what the protests are about and shouldnt be associated with the peaceful protestors… just the same way as we see good cops vs. corrupt cops. They simply arent the same.

    • I’ll gear up…

  6. These people are not protesters, they are domestic terrorist
And should be dealt with with an iron fist. Our local leadership
has failed. Kathryn Barger all the way up to governor smiley Newsom they should all resign.

  7. Wait for the carloads of opportunists to loot, vandalize, and set fire to our beautiful community. The people whom live in SCV and want to protest peacefully will have their peaceful protest hijacked. Resources are stretched thin and welcoming a large protest is welcoming mayhem. Be Safe SCV. We don’t want to ruin the community we all love so much, if you feel you want to make a difference try a different method of activism.

  8. National Guard should be waiting for them. We have 2 days notice. Demonstrate at will, but let’s have an overwhelming show of law enforcement.

    • Hi I’m Another Lisa different from response up ahead. I agree with you on NG and I believe our Mayor and sheriff are preparing for any situation. Be safe ALL. Stay home.

  9. Attacking our local law enforcement isn’t the answer.

These same kids were thanking these same officers a few months ago during the Saugus shooting and will be the first ones calling 911 when their mocha frap isn’t the correct temp.

The ones coming out of town aren’t interested in “justice” by attacking local LE. What did a sheriff in scv do to deserve to be yelled at and threatened for something that happened 2000 miles away in a city and state half these morons can’t spell or find on a map. They just want stolen loot.

And before someone gets pissed and goes all bla bla bla about racial this and oppression that, please, in detail, explain what a local LE did to you and if you filed a report as a documented complaint. Unless you have an actual story to tell, you’re just a zombie.

  10. Just remember, there might come the day where you want to publicly protest your own perceived injustice, so embrace those rights, but as far as the rats who hide among the protesters go, send them back to their own communities, in great pain, as far as I’m concerned.

  11. Great, now we send out an invitation in advance. Hope its peaceful. I do not think so. We will see.

  12. I seriously hope that our local sheriff’s department has the assistance of the national guard for this.
In SoCal, where we have seen many peaceful protests, outside groups such as AntiFA and others which have larger political goals effectively injure/kill people as well as have caused billions in damage.

Keep the protests peaceful. NOTHING good will come from destruction of these communities.

  13. The biggest KKK Rally took place at the Saugus Speedway–Santa Clarita in 1966. The city should be ashamed of that fact. For all you who dont support the movement, this is why it needs to be done. Do you want the world to think that the people of Santa Clarita are racist? Or that we have changed??

    • There was no Santa Clarita until 1987.

    • Where is the all lives matter people… I want to join them against this racist Black Lives Matter Group?

      • Exactly! These blm idiots got the cops all edgy now. they will have guns drawn for sure when they pull over w black person out of fear they will be shot and store owners will be following them around afraid they will steal something. They are making things worse for the entire black community. great job Blm

  14. We are sitting here under curfew, confined to our homes from 5pm to 6am because these “protests” are now RIOTS. SCV is situated between SFV,LA from the south and Palmdale/Lancaster/Bakersfield to the north. Areas rife with gang activity. geez, what could possibly go wrong? “we’ll just send them home we’re SVC strong!”
If anyone watched the video of the “peaceful protest” that happened here in SCV this past weekend – it wasn’t difficult to see the underlying rage that was being contained-one spark and all hell would have broken loose.(Recent riots have proven that the “peaceful demonstrators” are powerless against the RIOTERS…enter National Guard) Not to mention the disrespect at this “protest” shown to law enforcement officers as they stood statue-still & silent. But hey, let’s judge them all by the actions of a few. What does it matter that they have families too ? Families that are terrified every time these officers leave for work. What does it matter that shop owners who have spent their lives building a business are left begging to not be burnt down, what does it matter that a little old lady gets repeatedly punched in the face trying to protect her shop? What’s a few more lives lost when you can get up on your soap box, take a selfie to post on SM, and enforce your “right to Protest”. Who cares if it violates anothers “right to safety”-“right to walk freely in public spaces”
The original “protest” message has been heard loud & clear- Now lost in a frenzy of hate & violence. It is incomprehensible that anyone would risk the peace and safety of an entire community to invite pandemonium on top of pandemic.

  15. When it was just small groups from SCV protesting it wasn’t a problem but with this, I suggest ever business owner ARM them self’s to protect there livelihood. We know the police won’t protect stores from looting. We can’t let these THUGS destroy our city like they have everywhere else they have went!!!

  16. No sane person thinks what happened to George Floyd isn’t deplorable, horrible. But why did the city allow demonstrators over the weekend to occupy the intersection blocking traffic, including at one point an ambulance, all toll for 15 or twenty minutes before deputies got on it? I see the mayor is PC in his “the evidence is clear” statement. The evidence is clear he misses that he is mayor for ALL city residents not just the flavor du jour.

  17. I read all of these comments… It’s amazing what fear brings out in a person… I hope that changes one day.

  18. I’m wondering what the majority of you read, because the article -I- read said the information you’re discussing came from social media, not the City Council. The mayor made it abundantly clear that “looters and rioters who are looking to cause damage and steal property will be arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

I’m sure the KKK are loving all of this, but seriously, why bring them into the conversation?

  19. I left Santa Clarita a few years ago for a state that allows and encourages second amendment rights. In Cali I would be scared to death to use a weapon for self-defense. Where I am now, the bad guys are scared, as it should be! You can bet the rioters and looters are aware of this.

  20. Thank goodness this story rehashed the story of George Floyd and told us who he was — I’d never heard of him before this article.

  21. Instead of protesting in Valencia. Go to Sacramento and demand to be heard. But hey come looting I got plenty of rock salt laced with habanero seeds. My own design I eat habanero so it dosent bother me much

  22. Valencia awesome town needs their spotlight in news. Of course it won’t be peaceful. Who are these snowflakes trying to kid. If I was a business owner there I would be standing right behind my door and the first person who thinks they can break in and destroy my business would be met with Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson.

  23. I’m sure the new Turner’s store, and the Alamo store in Stevenson Ranch have seen an uptick in business, and the lumberyards are seeing increases in sales as merchants and small business owners prepare for what could be an onslaught on Thursday.

As far as busing, with the risks of Coronavirus still floating around, I’m sure no bus company will be running any charter buses to the SCV. Plus, Metro does not operate any bus route into the SCV – so right there, eliminates many from taking the bus once they discover Metro doesn’t come this way.

AV Transit (Palmdale) has one route down here (five trips a day), and Kern County Transit runs a bus from Bakersfield to Santa Clarita four trips a day.

Other than Metrolink, unless someone is driving, getting up here is not that easy – unless everyone takes the 757 – which I highly doubt, and the 757 schedule is already operating a reduced schedule. Plus, on Thursday – after 11 a.m., most bus service will begin/end on Cinema Dr., as the Transit Center will be closed. That’s a long walk from Cinema Dr. back to McBean and Valencia.

Being that the protest is set for the middle of the day, and a weekday at that – I just don’t expect that we will have the numbers of people that showed up on Saturday. Local businesses…stay strong!

    SO_CAL_RETAIL_SLUT

  24. Groups of proud Americans of all races are getting together to defend our American stores if the cops won’t

  25. Agree Glenda. I’m former Valencia resident. Regarding protesters from outside the area. Check out 2min interview, go to Youtube Soros paid protesters.

  26. Word from my son’s friend’s dad who is a policeman is that they are busing in 800 outside protesters and that to expect trouble.

Incidentally according to FBI stats for 2019 7400 blacks were killed. Ninety percent of those killed
were by other blacks. If Black lives matter why is there no discussion or big concern over those lives?

Also for 2019, there were 28 incidents were police shot unarmed individuals.
19 were white, 9 were black. of those, all 9 were judged to be justified as they were severely attacking someone.

There are 375,000,000 police-civilian interactions every year. Systemic Racism?

  27. Who wants to join me and rally against this. I am not for Black Lives Matter this is getting out of hand it is a racist organization. Dont let them fool you. I’m am in tears…this movement is not for peace…they want the destruction of the white race period. All those liberal whites that think they are being nice don’t get it. Wake up! They blatantly hurt all whites and have even stated that they will be hosting a blackout2020 …on July 7th in boycott of white businesses. They said they will try to do it for one day then a week then a month then a year. They are dividing us and we cant allow that. Please, people wake up…blacks commit more crime then any other race. Yet only make up 12 % of the population…I’m with my brothers and sisters in blue…stand strong. Racism is real and it is an anti white movement.

  28. Can a bunch of you go talk to a doctor about taking anti-anxiety medications? You sound paranoid and delusional and dangerous. And to be clear, I am talking about those seemingly expecting a protest to turn into a riot, those more worried about property than lives, and those thinking there’s some grand agenda working against you. Get a handle on your mental health, please. Times are stressful enough protecting ourselves and our loved ones from dying by covid without this extra fear-mongering and hate for your neighbors. We are a purple district. No one has to be paid or bussed in to show support for police reform. It is long overdue. Their culture is toxic and dangerous to the people they are meant to protect. Including black people that are your neighbors. SCV has diversity. Get over your irrational fears. There are professionals who can help you.

  29. This is getting too much hype. People have moved on locally, at least. IF there is a big turnout, it most likely would be people from other zip codes. Looking to exploit the peaceful protesters message.

Peaceful protesters- you can make a bigger impact if you first address the African Americans killing fellow African Americans. Stop the blame game on Law Enforcement. The bad apples don’t represent the majority. Blm is sounding more radicalized and hateful each day. Will the USA be labeling it a Terrorist Group in a few years? Hmmmm….

  30. Hi Neighbors. Watching what has been occurring in our neighboring communities such as Van Nuys and Hollywood etc..has been very sad. ALL Lives Matter. The issue is tomorrow and what may or may not happen. It’s best to be prepared and hope for the best. I do have confidence in our Community leaders to plan and prepare. Stay home and be safe. Have faith.

  31. I am tired of the liberal news saying that these people have a right to protest. They do NOT. They gave up that right the first time a store was broken into and looted, and now it has happened hundreds of times. There are no protestors. A blind man can see that the looters are working in conjunction with the supposed protestors. They distract the police and the looters follow a few blocks behind, breaking into stores, calling for cars to carry off the stolen goods, and torching the stores. Its gone down the same way in L.A., Santa Monica, Hollywood and Van Nuys. If I can see it, why can’t the police? I hope the Santa Clarita sheriffs have a plan to deal with this. If not, the citizens will.

  32. It is unfortunate that many people including some in this forum, cannot and will not understand what it is to be black in this country. You sit behind your white privileged lives and do not concern yourselves with the pain of others. You have a god given right to live free without provocation, discrimination or judgement. I as a black man, I do not. I saw an interesting questioned posed, and I have to at least let you understand where I’m coming from. The question was, “when was the first time you as an black man, had a gun pulled on you or harassed by the police.” Not if this has ever happened, but when. I was 8 yrs old. I was playing baseball in our school parking lot. We were drawn down on and handcuffed. For what? What do the white officers think and 8 year old child can do? That was done to burn into my memory what the police think of me. I was always told by my mother to never let anyone call you the N-word. In third grade, another student in my class called me that. When I confronted him, the teacher stepped in between us to ask what happened. I told her what the other student called me. The teacher in her infinite wisdom said to me, “well you are aren’t you?” Now as a child growing up, I was always taught to listen to my teachers, elders, and people in authority. How confused do you think I was as a child to hear this from my teacher? I’m 56 yrs old, and it still hurts. Those who live with the white privilege mentality, do not fear what could happen to them if they leave their home and get pulled over by the police. You are not looked down upon because of the color of your skin. Me stepping into an elevator with a white woman inside, and her clutching her purse in fear on the opposite side of the elevator. Standing at a corner just to cross the street, and a car pulls up right in front of me, looks at me, and locks the doors. Always concerned about where I am, and who’s around me. Always knowing that if something happens, I will be the one they blame. Being the only African American at my job site, and being treated as an outsider. You have know idea what people of color go through just to be recognized as human. So please understand white people, we as people of color do not hate you, we hate the ignorance and lack of understanding along with just plain common sense that seems to be lacking, or you just flat out don’t care. If you cannot understand that what happened to George Floyd was wrong, then you are in a sad state. You and that type of mentality are what we are up against. You choose to cheapen this cause by bunching peaceful protesting with criminals. I do not, nor ever condone violence and looting. It makes me just as angry as you are. These are opportunist and anarchist. They do not care about you, and they damn sure don’t care about me. They want chaos. So if you want to see what real peaceful protest are about, come out today and see what the cause is about, rather than what it is not. If you cannot give me respect as a man, then you sure as hell cannot give me respect as a black man. If you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem. I want to leave you with a very profound quote.

“There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe nor politic nor popular, but he must take it because his conscience tells him it is right.”

    Dr. Martin Luther King

  33. Christy. You are in a sad state. You fear what you do not know. I find you comical. Your fear is what makes you racist. You fail to acknowledge why these protest are happening in the first place. If you would of at least of acknowledged that what happened to Mr Floyd was wrong in your comment, you would of seemed like a decent person. Your idea of anyone wanting to destroy the white race, shows just how ignorant you are. You want to go counter protest solely to cause a reaction. Your fear is causing you to want to confront. Confrontation is not what this protest is about. You paint all protesters as criminals and looters. The people who are doing the looting and violence, are antagonist, criminals and anarchist like yourself trying to cause harm and disruption. You hop on the backs of a good cause, only to hide what you truly seek, and that is to reek havoc. Your mentality is what we as people of color are fighting against. Get over yourself Christy. Long gone are the days where white men can run through the town killing, maiming and lynching black people. You are no longer the masters. You are just normal folk, with bad hopes of grandeur for Jim Crow past times. Change is inevitable. You may pause it temporarily, you may even slow it down, but you will never be able to stop change. This United States of America, and all that it stands for, doesn’t apply to just you. It applies to everyone, and that’s what this protest is about. Systemic disparity and discrimination is perpetrated by people like yourself. Call yourself what you are, a bigot, a racist, and a separatist. I can deal with you on an intellectual level, if you are honest about who you are. Don’t hide behind this protest. If you truly believe what you think, then show up with your racist doctrine, where you as a white race is being destroyed. I hope you come today to the peaceful protest, so we can see who you are. You will see that your views are not shared by the masses, but by a small group of disenfranchised whites who are not happy with themselves. You don’t fear us, you fear yourself.

Christy, seek the truth, know the truth, and the truth shall set you free. Know your history. Stop talking with forked tongue. Stop blaming people of color for your inadequacies. You make true god fearing white people, look really bad.

  34. Good morning to all. I’m back to make just a short and final comment. Yesterday was a beautiful day. People of all races, creeds and colors, came out to support the peaceful protest. Some of you want others to believe that we as the protesters, who do live in Santa Clarita, and some who didn’t, had intentions to loot, burn or cause some sort of violence. That was not the case. I did notice one or two of the White Power screamers, and I may have saw two people flip us off as they drove by, but I would of preferred if you came out so we could possibly have some dialogue. Where we differ in somethings, I’m sure we would find common ground. Unfortunately, in your own fearful way, you chose to hide and talk nonsense in the shadows. I feel truly sorry for you. You fear the unknown. You fear what you do not understand, and you fear yourselves. There was nothing but peace, love and understanding yesterday, and I feel there is change in the air. I will pray for all of you who are paranoid, scared, distrusting and down right racist. We do not fear you anymore, yet for some reason you fear us. If there is anything that you should learn about the rhetoric you spouted about yesterday is, that the love and understanding that did take place clearly shows that you were seriously misguided, and just plain wrong. Since I was a child I was always taught to love everyone, even when they hate you. I am thankful for that teaching, and thankful for the opportunity to address you even if you are to afraid to address me.
Peace and blessings to you all.
    Stay safe and well.
