Complying with state mandates and national health advisories, College of the Canyons has announced a primarily online model of learning with some in-person courses catering to select interactive majors for the 2020 fall semester.
College of the Canyons has configured a learning model to prioritize virtual learning, while simultaneously implementing some in-person classes where seen fit to safely accommodate majors that require a hands-on approach, according to COC officials.
In light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, classes that require hands-on instruction—such as nursing, auto-technology and welding—will be held in person in an intricately scheduled manner to adhere to social distance precautions enforced by the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health.
The in-person schedule features a wide variety of career technical courses where students learn necessary skills to grow in high-demand fields. All other classes that do not require hands-on instruction are scheduled to be taught virtually.
“This fall semester will be the first time in the college’s history that the majority of courses will be held in a distance education format,” said Dr. Omar Torres, assistant superintendent and vice president of instruction at the college. “We have converted many courses to be taught online, including both lectures and labs, to create safe classroom environments for our students and faculty in disciplines that normally require hands-on instruction.”
Students and community members have the ability to choose from over 1,950 class sections in a wide range of academic subjects and career education disciplines that adequately adhere to online-learning models, according to COC officials.
Class sections encompass prerequisite courses, courses required to either graduate or transfer to four-year schools as well as classes that have not been previously offered in an online format.
Fall semester classes are scheduled to begin Monday, Aug. 24, and run through Saturday, Dec. 12, according to COC officials.
College of the Canyons will also offer a number of short-term courses designed to meet the needs of working adults, similar to schedules in years past, beginning in September and ending in October.
Enrollment fees are set to remain at $46 per unit at all 115 California Community Colleges, as mandated by the state of California.
Students and community members interested in attending classes this semester are encouraged to visit the college’s website in order to view the current schedule of classes and take the steps necessary to enroll.
