Colorful Holi Celebration Hosted At Castaic Lake

Bollywood music and color filled the air at Castaic Lake this Saturday as Child Rights and You (CRY) Los Angeles hosted a Holi festival to raise funds to support underprivileged children.

CRY Los Angeles hosted a Holi festival this Saturday at Castaic Lake Drive, with funds going toward CRY America projects supporting children’s education and health.

“This is a festival of joy and happiness. It liberates people’s energy and enthusiasm, and it spreads more and more happiness in the world,” said Andy Das, co-leader of CRY America’s LA Chapter.

Holi, also known as the Festival of Colors, is an Indian celebration that dates back centuries. Holi celebrates the coming of spring and the triumph of good over evil.

“Holi is a symbol that tells you spring is coming. We welcome spring in India by playing Holi,” said Varnica Singh, also a co-leader for CRY America’s LA Chapter. “We miss that cultural touch when we are in the U.S., and we want our kids to celebrate whatever festivals we have celebrated.”

While CRY has previously hosted kite festivals and arts carnivals, this was the first Holi festival hosted by CRY America.

Registration for the event was on the CRY America website, with tickets at $20 per individual.

“Everything 100% goes to charity–CRY America. We have various projects…in America and India,” said Singh. “Whatever funds are raised are used so that less privileged kids get right to education, security from domestic violence and child trafficking, and proper immunization.”

At the festival, all attendees received a packet of color, called gulal, which is thrown in the air in celebration.

There were also various vendors at the event, selling a variety of Indian-themed goods.

Nikitha Peram, owner of Ayra Boutique, was selling a variety of Indian jewelry and clothing at the event.

“It is nice getting to see people and having our culture around. I am here just to see everyone have fun. I am happy to be a part of this CRY event,” said Peram.

Justin Cruz, photo booth operator and owner, said he loved the colors. “Everyone throwing color in the air…it is a nice vibe,” said Cruz.

Despite the drizzle, families gathered and enjoyed dancing to DJ RIP, dining, and throwing color in the air.

“We want to thank all the participants and volunteers,” said Das. “We are looking forward to hosting more and more events to support CRY America. This is just the beginning.”
