The president of Comfort Keepers Home Care Santa Clarita is encouraging adult children to have an important conversation with their senior loved ones about the growing prevalence of scams to help prevent them from falling victim to one.

“We need to have that conversation with our parents, because seniors are very trusting,” said Myles McNamara. “They’re not used to scams, they’re not used to bad guys, so a lot of times they can be deceived.”

Just as adult children were told growing up not to take candy from strangers, McNamara noted that a similar conversation needs to be had in regards to seniors giving out their personal information.

“We just have to let them know, never give your personal information on the phone or on the internet. Never even give your phone number, much less your social security number,” McNamara said.

Not only seniors, but people of all ages are now falling for highly sophisticated scams that appear to be very official, according to McNamara.

“You’ll get an email, and it has the exact logo of your bank — everything looks so official, and it gives them a link to click here because there’s been fraud detected in your account or whatever,” he said. “It’s the same thing when they say the IRS is on the phone. Like the IRS says, they will send you mail correspondence — the IRS does not call you.”

One scam even uses the actual name of the senior’s grandchild and claims that they need money wired to them to be released from a foreign jail.

“They’re phone calls with a female or male voice saying, ‘Grandma, this is’ — they have the grandson’s name or the granddaughter’s name, and they’re in jail — ‘I went vacationing in Cabo and they arrested me. Don’t tell Mom, just wire the money,’” McNamara said.

He continued, “I just want to make sure our seniors and our adult kids who are looking after our seniors, that we educate them on, it’s called phishing… I just want our seniors to be aware as they’re that growing internet demographic that there’s bad guys out there, and don’t fall for it.”
