Dave Reeves Named Volunteer Of The Year For Service To Boys & Girls Club Of Santa Clarita

Santa Clarita resident Dave Reeves received the Tony Newhall Volunteer of the Year Award earlier this month for his service to the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley, officials said.

Throughout the years, Reeves has been a volunteer for the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley, wearing multiple hats, said Matthew Nelson, the club’s executive director.

“Everything I do in the community I do because I like giving,” Reeves said. “I don’t do any (work) to receive any awards.”

Reeves was made aware that he had received the award based on a text message from his wife, he said.

“I was coming back from Florida, and when I landed, I saw a text message from my wife that said, ‘Congratulations, honey,’ and when I scrolled up, I saw a picture of the plaque,” Reeves said.

Most of the youth that attend the Boys and Girls Club come from disenfranchised families and do not have a lot of things, Reeves said.

Some of the ways that Reeves helps these youth is by dressing up as Santa Claus and judging the Pinewood Derby contest, giving children in need holiday gifts and cash prizes to the winners to the race.

Last year was Reeves’ first time playing Santa for the club, which was a very gratifying experience, he said.

Giving a gift to children when dressed as Santa or handing the winner of the Pinewood derby race a $20 dollar bill is a good feeling, Reeves said.

Boys and Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley officials noted they are grateful for the work Reeves does.

“Thanks to volunteers like Dave that make this organization run,” Nelson said. ‘We couldn’t do it without him.”

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
